Ronnie Spector, the legendary singer of The Ronettes has died at the age of 78, it has been announced.
A statement issued by her family last night (January 12) read:
“Our beloved earth angel, Ronnie, peacefully left this world today after a brief battle with cancer. She was with family and in the arms of her husband, Jonathan.
Ronnie lived her life with a twinkle in her eye, a spunky attitude, a wicked sense of humor and a smile on her face. She was filled with love and gratitude.
Her joyful sound, playful nature and magical presence will live on in all who knew, heard or saw her.”
Ronnie Spector was born Veronica Bennett in New York in 1943. She formed the Ronettes in 1957 and the line-up was settled on her elder sister Estelle Bennett and cousin Nedra Talley, after a disastrous attempt to add their male cousin Ira to the line-up failed when he froze at a talent show leading to Ronnie taking over.
Naming themselves Ronnie and the Relatives, the trio would play local clubs around Washington Heights, Manhattan, earning themselves both a residency and an eventual record deal with Colpix Records. However those early singles failed to make the Billboard Top 200.
Estelle organised an audition with the producer Phil Spector, whose ‘Wall of Sound’ was a pioneering recording technique (basically lots of multi-tracks making it sound like two orchestras are playing at once) who signed the group, and whose co-written song Be My Baby became their first hit, reaching No 2 in the US in 1963, and No 4 in the UK. Further hits followed with Walking In The Rain and Baby I Love You.
In 1968, she married Spector, an abusive relationship, they were married for six years and adopted three children together before their divorce. The Ronettes
