Roadside Attractions ‘Joe Bell’ Hits Theaters After Bumpy Road From Toronto Premiere – Specialty Preview

Science fiction drama Nine Days from Sony Pictures Classics opens in four theaters in a specialty market buoyed by recent releases like Roadrunner: A Film About Anthony Bourdain and Pig. New York’s arthouse scene, outpaced by LA of late, is perking up, distributors say (Ailey numbers were super there) and moviegoers are rewarding unique films and strong stories.

Roadrunner: A Film About Anthony Bourdain kept its spot in the North American top ten for week two in 954 theaters – up by 27 — with an $830,000 estimated gross for the three days, leading the specialty box office.

The "Spenser Confidential" actor, 50, portrays the blue-collar dad from Oregon who makes it a mission to spread the message of anti-bullying after losing his 15-year-old teenage son, Jadin Bell, to suicide in 2013.

Jennifer Yuma Two-time Oscar nominee Keira Knightley will lead the voice cast of graphic novel adaptation “Charlotte,” which is set to premiere at the Toronto Film Festival.Along with Knightley, the “Charlotte” voice cast includes Jim Broadbent, Sam Claflin, Henry Czerny, Eddie Marsan, Brenda Blethyn and Sophie Okonedo.“Charlotte” is directed by Eric Warin and Tahir Rana, with the screenplay written by Erik Rutherford and David Bezmozgis.

The new film, “Joe Bell,” charts the true story of a working-class father (played by Mark Wahlberg) who begins walking to New York after his gay son Jadin (Reid Miller) takes his own life after being bullied. “Joe Bell” premiered at the 2020 Toronto International Film Festival and opens in theaters this week. It has a screenplay by Larry McMurtry and Diana Ossana, who won an Oscar for “Brokeback Mountain.”
