Former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand criticised Erik ten Hag for his decision to substitute Cristiano Ronaldo during Sunday's goalless draw with Newcastle United at Old Trafford.
Ronaldo, who was awarded just his second Premier League start of the season against the Magpies, was taken off with just under 20 minutes left on the clock and replaced by Marcus Rashford. The latter had started on the bench due to 'feeling under the weather'.
Ten Hag's decision, considering United were in need of a goal, to take Ronaldo off came as a surprise. The Portuguese star was seeing more of the ball in the second half after being starved of opportunities prior to the break.

And for Ferdinand, who has remained friends with Ronaldo following their time together at United, Ten Hag was wrong to withdraw the Portugal international. Furthermore, he believes he would have buried the opportunity that Rashford squandered late on to win the game.
"Obviously he's disappointed," Ferdinand told Vibe with Five. "He's not happy, but if you take off any number nine when they're still trying to score a goal they won't be happy.
"But I always think, keep your goalscorers on the pitch at the end of a game to score goals."
Although Ferdinand was unimpressed by Ten Hag's decision to take Ronaldo off, he made it clear that he had no issue with Rashford stepping into the heat of the battle. The England international has been excellent in recent weeks, offering plenty of encouragement.
Ferdinand added: "I agree with the decision to bring Marcus on, 100 per cent, but you keep your goals on the pitch. Who else is going to get you the goal?
