Harry Styles and Elvis Presley are both pop-culture sensations who crossed over to movies after wildly successful music careers. But for “Elvis” director Baz Luhrmann, their status as generational icons made Styles a poor choice to play The King in his new biopic.

Baz Luhrmann revealed why Harry Styles wasn’t cast as Elvis Presley in the upcoming “Elvis” movie in a new interview.

Elvis’ granddaughter, Riley Keogh, took the stage on Sunday during the MTV Movie & TV Awards to present a sneak peek of the upcoming Baz Luhrmann biopic about the King of Rock & Roll. Riley reflected on her grandfather's legacy as she took the stage during the awards to share a never-before-seen clip of the film.

CANNES – Following its world premiere at the 2022 Cannes Film Festival the reviews for Baz Luhrmann’s “Elvis” are in. So far most critics have raved about Austin Butler’s performance as the King of Rock and Roll and complicated Luhrmann’s staging of the movie’s musical performances.

“When we made this, we wanted to make it theatrical to bring audiences into theaters,” said Baz Luhrmann at the Cannes press conference for Elvis, the morning after the pic received the longest standing ovation of the fest at ten minutes.

Elvis Presley, has spoken about the “emotional experience” of watching Baz Luhrmann’s Elvis at Cannes Film Festival.“It’s very intense to watch when it’s your family,” the actor/director told Variety. “The first movie I ever watched in the theater and said I wanted to make movies was ( Luhrmann’s) Moulin Rouge when I was 12. It was a real honour to know Baz was doing this movie.

The film focuses on two young Native Americans coming of age and trying to get by in a story set on the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota. It is a location that has intrigued other filmmakers like Chloe Zhao (The Rider) in recent years, and now has caught the attention of Keough and her co-director Gina Gammell in order to tell an authentic and unique contemporary tale of Native American youth brought to life by an impressive group of first-time actors, mostly locals the directors cast in order to give this as fresh and real a feel as possible. They have succeeded.
