The Weeknd, Dolly Parton, Common, ‘Weird Al’ Yankovic Among Entries in Emmy’s Music Categories

Jon Burlingame Three months from now, the Weeknd might just have an Emmy to place alongside his four Grammys and his Oscar nomination. That’s because he joins a dozen other music superstars — including Dolly Parton, Common, Ryan Tedder, “Weird Al” Yankovic and Meshell Ndegeocello — who have entered work in this year’s Emmy competition. Voting began yesterday in the seven music categories. Approximately 550 members of the Academy’s music branch (composers, songwriters, music directors, orchestrators or music supervisors) will cast ballots, although viewing the hundreds of entries before voting ends on June 26 is an impossible task, Academy officials privately concede.

DJ Khaled wipes out in surfing accident, shares 'recovery' efforts with massages and golfing

Justin Bieber, Rihanna, Drake and Jay-Z have each topped the charts with hits created by DJ Khaled.  But the mega producer was the one taking the hit this time, after he crashed into the water while surfing on an electric foil board. Known for his overwhelming optimism and signature catchphrases, like "We the best" and "Anotha one," Khaled was singing a different tune after the accident. Khaled, whose full name is Khaled Mohammed Khaled, went into a full "recovery moment" that included a private massage and golfing with a Turks and Caicos sports director.  A few days ago, Khaled was on the greens hitting golf balls.

Grammy winner is 'mad' at father for creating 'mess' with homophobic tweet

Justin Bieber is angry that his father created a "mess" with a homophobic tweet and a depthless apology. Earlier in the week, Jeremy Bieber took to Twitter to post a rainbow flag with the sarcastic caption, "Don't forget to thank a straight person this month for your existence." The message, which was later deleted, came two days after he publicly shaded Pride Month, tweeting, "We need to celebrate families. U know the reason we're all here! The things this generation glorifies is unbelievable!" In the immediate aftermath of Wednesday's message, fans torched Jeremy online.

‘The Flash’ Review: Ezra Miller Is on a Bender of High Anxiety in a Movie That Starts Strong and Grows Overwrought

Owen Gleiberman Chief Film Critic In comic-book movies, when it comes to a hero’s superpowers — flying, lifting objects, repelling bullets, the indomitability of a shield or hammer — the audience is almost always on the outside looking in. But in “The Flash,” when the title character throttles forward at the speed of the hot-singe lightning streaks at his back, or floats through the air in slowed-down motion so beyond bullet-time that a mere second appears to last forever, the movie makes us part of the experience. We know just what he’s going through, which is why the scene gives you a jolt.     Early on, Barry Allen (Ezra Miller), a forensic chemist in the Central City Police Department, receives a call from Alfred (Jeremy Irons) — yes, that Alfred — letting him know that there’s an attack underway, and that none of the other Justice League members, notably Batman, is around to help. So Barry, in his form-fitting red thermal crystal helmet and suit, zoom-runs all the way to Gotham City, where he confronts a high-rise hospital whose east wing is collapsing, leaving a nursery full of newborns falling through the air. The extended sequence in which he saves them, grabbing energy bites of candy and burrito in between, has the feel of an underwater comedy ballet. It’s life-or-death but cheeky as hell. Just like our cracked hero.

Noel Gallagher and Foo Fighters in close race for UK’s Number One album

Foo Fighters and Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds are currently in a neck-and-neck race to reach the Number One spot on the UK album charts this week. Both acts released their latest LPs — ‘But Here We Are’ and ‘Council Skies’ — last Friday (June 2) and as it stands, it is too close to call which one will reach the peak position on the Official Album Chart by the end of this week.Currently at the midweek mark, Noel Gallagher has surpassed the American rockers and stands as the UK’s best-selling album with his fourth solo album with High Flying Birds. That being said, the two remain almost neck and neck, as just 200 units separate them from first and second position. The victory would no doubt mark an important milestone for Foo Fighters, as ‘But Here We Are’ marks their first full-length LP since the death of drummer Taylor Hawkins in March last year.

How Real Is Queen’s ‘Billion-Dollar Catalog Deal’?

Jem Aswad Senior Music Editor After months of murmurs, news broke just before the long Memorial Day weekend that, according to unnamed sources, the surviving members of Queen were in the process of closing a deal for the legendary group’s catalog for a mind-boggling $1 billion. Universal Music Group, the world’s largest music company, was said to be the likely buyer. Three sources tell Variety the deal is in advanced stages — although another close to the situation says it is very preliminary — and that the billion-dollar price tag is “real.” However, exactly what is included in the package is not entirely clear. The deal “is Universal’s to lose,” two sources said — although Sony Music is said to be waiting in the wings — owing to the company’s longstanding relationship with the group, which signed with EMI in 1972 and remained with the company, which was acquired by Universal in 2011, throughout its career, However, in 1991 it signed a deal with Hollywood Records for U.S. and Canadian recorded-music rights only, which led to a later acquisition by the company of those assets — and therein lies one of the complicating factors.

Audio Up, Z2 Partner for ‘Neon Empire’ Graphic Novel and Podcast Based on Fictional Country Star

William Earl Podcast network Audio Up and graphic novel publisher and merchandiser Z2 are partnering to produce the fictional “Neon Empire.” Described as “one part ‘8 Mile’ with a dash of ‘Once Upon a Time in America,’ the story is a dark send-up of Nashville’s music business featuring original music from top country artists. Based on a central character called Kountry Boi, the “hick-hop” star goes from rags to rap riches while coming to terms with his own troubled past. The idea was developed by Audio Up founder Jared Gutstadt, who played an early instrumental role in the development of real-life genre-hopper Jelly Roll. “Country music is changing, and the new outlaws are defining this town,” said Gutstadt, who is in the process of building a Nashville outpost for his company. “Until now, it was unheard of to have country acts with tattoos on their face who refused to conform to the strict guidelines and cookie-cutter approach of Music Row. This new world has yet to be explored in fiction, and Neon Empire is an expose of this creative, hyperkinetic, and often violent world. This is fiction rooted in a reality that I’ve been dying to reveal. Z2 is the perfect conduit and partner to bring this to life.”

late singer’s wardrobe hit the auction block on Friday and can be bid on online until June 18.The highlight of the lot, which contains 45 pieces of Petty’s prized possessions, is the black-and-white striped satin jacket he donned on the cover of the UK single for his 1978 hit, “Listen to Her Heart.”“For people my age, that’s Tom Petty, you know,” Bobby Livingston, executive vice president of Boston-based RR Auction, which is hosting the sale, told The Post.“Because of people’s love and emotional connection to Tom, I wouldn’t be surprised if this goes somewhere in the mid-five figures.”The eclectic clothing collection is from Petty’s Encino, California, home, which Chase Bank took possession of in 2015.“When he divorced his first wife [Jane Benyo], she got the house and then she defaulted on the mortgage, so the bank took possession of the home and its contents and these were all disposed of by the bank,” explained Livingston. Other articles for sale belonging to the “Free Fallin'” rocker, who died in 2017 at age 66 from an accidental overdose, include the black denim jacket he sported on tour with Guns N’ Roses in 1987 and during a 1989 MTV Video Music Awards performance with Axl Rose.He also had a penchant for wearing hats, and many of them, including a Burmese cap adorned with yellow flowers and two elephants, are included in the assortment.

Former Hillsong Pastor Carl Lentz Speaks Out in New Documentary: The Biggest Bombshells

, a new four-part Hulu documentary series from FX and  explores the rise and fall of a megachurch — and the charismatic pastor at the center of it all. Most of the public first heard of Carl Lentz over a decade ago. He made headlines as the «spiritual advisor» spotted hanging out with Justin Bieber, who was in the midst of a notorious spree of minor arrests and public altercations (remember the mop bucket?). Lentz co-founded and served as the head pastor at Hillsong NYC — an offshoot of the original Australian megachurch — from 2010-2020, eventually becoming something of a star in his own right as A-listers flocked to the casual and contemporary services and membership numbers skyrocketed. While Hillsong projected an image of a progressive church for a new age, many interviewed in the series paint the real story in a different light.

ASCAP Pop Awards Honor ‘Stay’ as Song of the Year, Dr. Luke as Most Played Songwriter, Sony Music as Top Publisher

Chris Willman Senior Music Writer and Chief Music Critic The ASCAP Pop Music Awards honored “Stay,” by the Kid Laroi featuring Justin Bieber, as the org’s pop music song of the year Thursday night. That number came out on top as the performing rights organization calculated the most-played affiliated songs of the past 12 months, with results for the 40th annual awards revealed at a private party held for members at Yamashiro in Hollywood. The org’s interest in “Stay” is via ASCAP member Bieber, one of the co-writers on the smash. The song spent seven weeks atop the Billboard Hot 100 in mid-2022. Dr. Luke was named the songwriter of the year, largely for his participation in hits that have continued to do well off Doja Cat’s 2021 album “Planet Her,” primarily “Need to Know,” “Woman” and “You Right.” The success of Latto’s “High Energy” and Nicki Minaj’s “Super Freaky Girl” also contributed to the producer-writer achieving the highest number of plays for the year.
