King Charles III has taken his place by his mother Queen Elizabeth II's coffin at St Giles' Cathedral for the Vigil of the Princes. The new monarch, 73, has been joined by his siblings Princess Anne, 72, Prince Andrew, 62, and Prince Edward, 58, each positioning themselves in one corner of the casket to "stand guard". Princess Anne has become the first woman to ever take part in the Vigil of the Princes ceremony, which has until now always been carried out by the male members of the Royal Family.
She was seen in uniform while keeping completely silent, much like her brothers, with her head bowed by her mother's coffin. While Anne kept her eyes glued to the ground, her brother Andrew closed his eyes and kept his hands clasped together during the sombre 20-minutes they stood together.
Queen Elizabeth II's four children were seen standing alongside four suited members of the Royal Company of Archers, who were dressed in long-feathered hats and armed with arrows and quivers. Meanwhile Charles, who donned a suit and kilt for the event, stood at the front – looking downcast as he paid his respects to his mother's memory.
