Prince William, the Duke of Cambridge, has made a last-minute trip to the United Arab Emirates to represent the Queen, after the sad passing of UAE President Sheikh Khalifa. President Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed al-Nahyan of the United Arab Emirates and ruler of the country’s capital, Abu Dhabi, died aged 73 on May 13.
Prince William, 39, made an overnight trip to offer condolences to Sheikh Khalifa’s half-brother, Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed al-Nahyan, who is now in charge of state affairs, on behalf of the Queen and the royal family. It is the first time that Prince William has offered condolences on a death of the head of a foreign state, on behalf of the Queen.

Meeting with Sheikh Mohamed in Mushrif Palace in Abu Dhabi, Prince William also offered his congratulations on his appointment as the new UAE president.The British Embassy in the UAE posted a photograph to Twitter of the Duke of Cambridge meeting with Sheikh Mohammed.The Duke wore a dark navy suit and tie with a white shirt, and he donned a face mask as he spoke to the new UAE President.
Other presidents and leaders flew in from around the world to offer their condolences to Sheikh Khalifa’s family, estimated to be worth £123bn, including the British Prime Minister, Boris Johnson, and Spanish monarch King Felipe VI. Sheikh Khalifa had been president of the UAE since 2004, but his role became largely ceremonial since he suffered a stroke in 2014.
