Premier League clubs may soon have to show proof of four positive Coronavirus tests within their squad in order to have a fixture postponed under a stern change in approach.
The league is currently examining the prospect of making the change in order to cut the number of postponements that have ripped their way through England's top-flight in recent weeks.
According to the Mail, a change in approach, that would see Premier League clubs move away from 'available players' to 'active Covid cases,' has been discussed during discussions with the league and its 20 clubs. It is reported that as many as 18 clubs have already backed the idea and the change could come into effect as soon as the next round of fixtures in less than a fortnight's time.
As things currently stand, clubs who want to have a fixture postponed have to prove that they do not have 13 players available plus a goalkeeper, with injury issues and international commitments taken into consideration, alongside confirmed Covid-19 cases.
The current rules have lead to 22 postponements in the Premier League and the decision to call-off the north London derby between Tottenham Hotspur and Arsenal just over a week ago was blasted, with only one positive Covid-19 case having been confirmed.
Therefore, the request to have a fixture postponed must see the club in question provide proof of four positive Covid-19 tests within the squad. Furthermore, the report states that would be seen as a 'minimum requirement' rather than an automatic cancellation.
Premier League chief executive Richard Masters is the man behind the plan, with the league boss determined to take action.
