Police have been invited to help a Rochdale children’s home following a ‘significant number’ of incidents in which youngsters have gone missing. The council-run home, which cannot be named, was rated ‘inadequate’ by Ofsted following a two day inspection in June.
A report detailed ‘serious failures’ to protect young people - including those at risk of sexual exploitation - noting that children’s welfare was not always promoted or safeguarded. Among the most concerning aspects was the number of incidents involving children going missing from home.
The manager and staff acknowledged ‘their repeated inability’ to effectively monitor children’s activities. Inspectors noted that, beyond phone calls or text, staff did not have a system for assuring themselves that children are safe.

The council says it has taken 'swift and decisive action' to improve the service and is now in a 'robust position' - citing Ofsted's decision to lift a restricion barring the home from taking in any further children. And a new report, published after a follow-up visit last month, reveals that police could help the home to tackle the problem under a ‘robust’ new approach.
It reads: “The provider has invited the police to deliver training to the staff team that focuses on a standardised approach to deal with incidents of missing and absence from home across Greater Manchester Police. This includes clarity on the role of the staff team and the role of the police when children go missing from home.”
