Part of the Pointless charm is its brainiac co-host Richard Osman... or at least, it would be if he wasn't due to leave after 13 years. But that means we've had plenty of time to get to know the charismatic comedian over the years, including the fact that his debut novel The Thursday Murder Club has been picked up by none other than the great Steven Spielberf.
Yet, something you might not know, and might even get you a pointless answer on the show, is that Richard has a lesser-known claim to fame thanks his rockstar older brother. From suits and ties to one of the biggest Britpop bands in history, the brothers are quite an unexpected pair. Mat Osman is a bass guitarist and founding member of Suede, one of the 'Britpop big four' from the '90s alongside other highly-acclaimed bands Oasis, Blur and Pulp.
During an appearance on The Douglas Anderson Show, Richard confessed that he had "always been a fan" of his brother's music. He added: "And then it broke for them very, very big in the early 90s, and it was amazing." Richard said he used to hear Mat recording demos upstairs at their home when he was a teenager. Mat also has roots in television, having provided music for programmes such as 8 Out of 10 Cats, The Marriage Ref and You Have Been Watching after Suede broke up for the first time in 2003. When the band reformed in 2010, Mat returned to play alongside them, but also pursued a passion much like his published younger brother and debuted his first book, The Ruins, in February 2020.
