Dutch princess moved from student housing to palace over security concerns, crime gang threats

Dutch Princess Catharina-Amalia, the future queen of the Netherlands, has moved into a palace in The Hague and "can’t really go outside" in a sharp reversal from her plans to attend college and live like a "regular student." "It has enormous consequences for her life," Queen Maxima said at a news conference Thursday during a state visit to Sweden. "It means that she’s not living in Amsterdam and that she can’t really go outside." The princess has made efforts to try and live a more normal life, such as foregoing her entitled allowance when she turned 18, a sum of roughly $1.9 million per year.  "I find that uncomfortable as long as I am not doing a lot in return and other students have it much harder," Amalia wrote in a letter to Prime Minister Mark Rutte of her decision.  Princess Catharina-Amalia of the Netherlands attends the concert, "Queen Maxima a life full of Music," at theater Carre May 12, 2021, in The Hague, Netherlands.  (Patrick van Katwijk/WireImage) Her first day at the University of Amsterdam drew immense public attention.

Dutch King Willem-Alexander pokes fun at Kate Middleton photo scandal with Photoshop jibe

recent photo-editing scandal. The Dutch monarch, 56, spoke to members of the public at a royal engagement in Zutphen, Netherlands Thursday where a little girl asked him about his family portrait. After exchanging a few pleasantries with the schoolgirl, the King reportedly quipped, “At least I didn’t photoshop it,” referencing Middleton’s recent digital mishap. The joke seemingly landed with royalists, who burst into laughter at the cheeky jibe. The Princess of Wales, 42, was forced to issue an apology this week after she released a doctored family photo for UK Mother’s Day on March 10.Just seconds after the image was unveiled on social media, eagle-eyed followers noticed a myriad of editing mishaps in the photo of the royal with her three children. The widespread speculation prompted conspiracy theorists to come out of the woodwork, with claims being made not only about Middleton’s health, but also her whereabouts.Middleton returned to social media to set the record straight on what had happened with the snap.“Like many amateur photographers, I do occasionally experiment with editing,” she wrote on X in the wake of the controversy.

Dutch king won't use carriage criticized for colonial image

THE HAGUE, Netherlands -- The Dutch king ruled out Thursday using, for now at least, the royal family's “Golden Carriage,” one side of which bears a painting that critics say glorifies the Netherlands' colonial past, including its role in the global slave trade. The announcement was an acknowledgement of the heated debate about the carriage as the Netherlands reckons with the grim sides of its history as a 17th-century colonial superpower, including Dutch merchants making vast fortunes from slaves.“The Golden Carriage will only be able to drive again when the Netherlands is ready and that is not the case now,” King Willem-Alexander said in a video message. One side of the vehicle is decorated with a painting called “Tribute from the Colonies” that shows Black and Asian people, one of them kneeling, offering goods to a seated young white woman who symbolizes the Netherlands. The carriage is currently on display in an Amsterdam museum following a lengthy restoration. In the past it has been used to carry Dutch monarchs through the streets of The Hague to the state opening of Parliament each September.“There is no point in condemning and disqualifying what has happened through the lens of our time,” the king said.
