Tom Werner’s Werner Entertainment, the production company behind ABC’s popular comedy series The Conners, has signed a global licensing deal with Lionsgate’s Worldwide Television Distribution Group and Debmar-Mercury.

Second in a series on broadcast network series renewals. This is a rarity — it’s still mid-April and ABC has already made decisions on all of its existing drama series.

The series independently produced by Werner Entertainment has been sold in syndication by distributor Debmar-Mecury to TV station groups representating 85% of U.S. TV households.

The Conners will be without a familiar face in Season 6. Jayden Rey, who has played DJ’s daughter Mary since the launch of the Roseanne revival, will not be returning as a series regular in the upcoming season, sources confirm to Deadline.

This is something we don’t see often — repeats of a current broadcast series airing concurrently on another broadcast network in primetime. In a deal with Lionsgate, the CW has acquired the five existing seasons of ABC’s comedy series The Conners. Back-to-back reruns of the Roseanne spinoff will air Thursdays 8:30 PM – 9:30 PM, flanked by original episodes of Canadian comedy imports Son of a Critch at 8 PM and Children Ruin Everything at 9:30 PM.

The show’s Season 5 finale, which aired on May 3, scored a 0.45 rating among adults 18-49 and 3.6 million viewers during its 8 p.m. timeslot, ultimately defeating the series finale of “The Goldbergs,” which earned a 0.30 rating among the key demo and drew in 2.5 million total viewers as the show came to a close after 10 years on the network.

The Conners are sticking around at ABC. The series has been renewed for its sixth season, the network announced Tuesday.

Also starring are Finn Sweeney and Sofia Capanna as Jim and Julia’s kids, Jimmy Jr. and Grace, respectively. O’Malley and Cryer both serve as executive producers along with Tom Werner, Wyc Grousbeck, Emilia Fazzalari and George Geyer. Fishman played DJ Tanner in the series, reprising the role he played for 10 seasons on “Roseanne.” Exact details on how Fishman will be written out of the show are currently under wraps, but it will supposedly leave the door open for him to return. Jayden Rey, who plays DJ’s daughter Mary in the show, will also not be back as a series regular, though she will appear in a guest star role. John Goodman, Laurie Metcalf, Sara Gilbert, Lecy Goranson, Emma Kenney, Ames McNamara, Jay R. Ferguson, and Katey Sagal will all return for the new season. Fishman first began playing DJ Tanner in 1988 in the second episode of “Roseanne.” He stayed with the show throughout its first nine seasons, returning along with the rest of the original cast for the 2018 revival. He has also directed five episodes of “The Conners” since 2020, most recently directing the Season 4 episode “Messy Situation, Miscommunication and Academic Probation.”
