‘Encanto’ Co-Director Shocked by Best Director Win Over Steven Spielberg at 2022 Imagen Awards: ‘That’s Serious Bragging Rights’

Katie Reul editor “Encanto” swept the 37th annual Imagen Awards, which was held Sunday at Downtown Los Angeles’ La Plaza de Cultura y Artes, but the Disney musical movie was closely matched by several wins from Hulu’s “Love, Victor.” Overall, “Encanto” creators took home the most awards of any nominated project and were recognized for Best Feature Film, Best Music Composition for Film or Television, Best Music Supervision for Film or Television and Best Director – Feature Film, which co-director Charise Castro Smith was not expecting. “I’m pretty sure my mom is never going to live down the fact that I won a best director award when nominated against Stephen Spielberg,” Castro Smith, who is also known for producing “The Haunting of Hill House,” joked with the audience during her acceptance speech. “That’s serious bragging rights for her Zumba class.”

The Music of ‘Turning Red’ Is an All-Star Affair Featuring Billie Eilish, Finneas and Ludwig Goransson

Jon Burlingame editor“Turning Red,” Pixar’s latest animated adventure, posed some pretty big musical challenges: it’s about a 13-year-old girl, obsessed with a boy band, whose Chinese ancestry literally looms large as she turns into a giant panda when her emotions spin out of control. It demanded a trio of world-class talents: Grammy winners Billie Eilish and Finneas O’Connell for the songs and Oscar, Emmy and Grammy winner Ludwig Göransson to compose the score. That such high-profile talents were available and eager to contribute to “Turning Red” says a lot about the music-friendly reputation of Pixar, which has won five music Oscars (including last year’s “Soul”) and 11 more nominations for either song or score since the original “Toy Story” in 1995. Tom MacDougall, president of Walt Disney Music, conferred with director Domee Shi — whose personal coming-of-age, mother-daughter conflict story inspired “Turning Red” — and reached out to all of them in 2019, before production on the film began.MacDougall had been a fan since Eilish’s early hit “Ocean Eyes” and was impressed, he says, “by the breadth of the territory that their songwriting and performing covered” ever since.

Lin-Manuel Miranda Has Already Pitched an ‘Encanto’ Ride to Bob Chapek

“Encanto.”Miranda’s second feature for Walt Disney Animation Studios after “Moana,” “Encanto” tells the story of a family in Colombia at the turn of the 20th century, each of whom is gifted with a magical ability … all except awkward Mirabel (Stephanie Beatriz). While it was released into theaters at Thanksgiving, it really made a splash at Christmas, when it debuted on Disney+. Since then, it has been nominated for two Oscars (including one for Best Original Song), the soundtrack has dominated the Billboard charts, and it has been immortalized in countless TikTok videos, pieces of fan art, and highly sharable memes. In a wide-ranging interview, Miranda talks about the differences between working on “Moana” and “Encanto,” what he thinks about Disney CEO Bob Chapek calling “Encanto” the company’s newest animated franchise, and sheds some light on what he’s doing for the upcoming live-action “Little Mermaid” adaptation.“Encanto” directors Byron Howard and Jared Bush told me it was your idea to set the movie in Latin America. Confirm or deny?Lin-Manuel Miranda: I guess so.

‘Encanto': Germaine Franco on Being the First Female Composer of a Disney Animated Feature

“Encanto,” Disney’s latest animated musical, is having a moment. What’s so odd about this is that the movie was released back at Thanksgiving, but only now is reaching the kind of cultural critical mass that is usually associated with Disney’s most zeitgeist-capturing efforts. With the movie landing on Disney+ on Christmas Eve, its popularity exploded, particularly when it came to the songs by “Hamilton” mastermind Lin-Manuel Miranda, which are now topping streaming charts along with the full album, featuring the lush original score by Germaine Franco.TheWrap spoke with Franco, who had previously contributed music to Pixar’s “Coco,” about how she initially got involved with the project, maintaining the Disney sound, what her reaction to the response has been, and how it feels to be the first female composer to score a Disney animated film. How did you initially get involved?I was approached by Tom MacDougall, who’s the head of Disney Music and Lin-Manuel Miranda. They both suggested me for the project, and then I met with the directors, Byron [Howard] and Jared [Bush], one of the producers, and Clark [Spencer, President of Walt Disney Animation Studios].
