Across six previous features, writer/director Tim Sutton has excelled at crafting moody, ephemeral character studies that have prioritized feeling over plot, sometimes for the best (see “Donnybrook”) and sometimes to a film’s complete detriment (see last year’s languid “The Last Son”).

Last year, “Funny Face” director Tim Sutton‘s western “The Last Son” saw Colson Baker (aka Machine Gun Kelly) on the big screen yet again. While the film flopped, apparently Sutton and Baker like working together because they’re back with “Taurus,” ready to hit theaters next month.

RLJE Films has acquired the domestic rights to “Taurus,” ahead of its North American premiere at this year’s Tribeca Film Festival, the distributor announced on Monday. The film, written and directed by Tim Sutton (“Donnybrook,” “Dark Night”), stars Colson Baker (aka Machine Gun Kelly) and will be released in theaters later this year.The film also stars Maddie Hasson, Scoot McNairy, Megan Fox and Ruby Rose.

The drama, which had its world premiere earlier this year at the Berlin Film Festival, is gearing up for its North American premiere next month at the Tribeca Festival. Guy Lodge Film CriticThat Colson Baker can act is no revelation. The rap-rocker, better known to his legions of fans as Machine Gun Kelly, has already held his own in a dozen or so roles for film and TV, demonstrating a scuzzy on-screen charisma within admittedly limited boundaries.

Rapper Machine Gun Kelly plays a self-destructive musician in Tim Sutton’s Taurus, premiering in the Panorama section of the Berlin Film Festival. Going by his real name, Colson Baker, he puts in an authentic turn as his character Cole flits between the studio, his expensive apartment and an array of seedy bars and strip clubs. Adding to a sense of impending doom is a disturbing opening scene involving a child with a loaded gun. The significance of this is later revealed, but it could also be considered a symbol of Cole himself: an immature person who has great power, and an attraction to danger.

K.J. Yossman “Taurus” is the semi-autobiographical tale of a rap-slash-rock star on the tail-end of a self-destructive kick. Set to premiere at the Berlin Film Festival Feb.

There’s still a lot of uncertainty about how the pandemic is going to affect some of the 2022 film festivals, particularly the ones earlier in the year. I’ve said it a million times already, but Tim Sutton is one of the best indie filmmakers working today. With films like “Dark Night,” “Memphis” and “Pavillion,” he has proven that he’s able to tell dark stories that really cut to the core.

“Funny Face” is a superhero film only Tim Sutton could make. The film follows the story of a young guy named Saul, who is upset with his life and the direction he thinks New York City is headed.

On the surface, “Funny Face” might look like a drama about a very angry man that feels completely out of control of his life and has to take it out on the only enemy that he can find, a wealthy, corrupt businessman. But under the surface, there’s a lot more going on in Tim Sutton’s drama than meets the eye.

Odds are, if you’ve seen any images or clips from the new film, “Funny Face,” you’re familiar with the image of a man in a creepy smiley mask. And while there are no capes or Infinity Stones to be found, as seen in the new trailer for the film, “Funny Face” is definitely a story about two people trying to save the soul of their little slice of New York City.

It’s been a good few years for Margaret Qualley. Breaking out in “The Leftovers,” she’s since caught the eye of Spike Jonze (“Kenzo World“), Quentin Tarantino (“Once Upon a Time in Hollywood“), Netflix (“IO” opposite Anthony Mackie), FX (“Fosse/Verdon“), Tim Sutton (“Donnybrook“), Claire Denis (the not-yet-shot, “The Stars At Noon“) and has amassed a nice little career for herself that has come close to peaking yet.

If you know anything about the folks here at The Playlist, it’s that we love to highlight indie films that really excite us, especially those that tend to fly under the radar of the typical film watcher. And last year, one of those films (and one of my personal favorites) was “Donnybrook” by filmmaker Tim Sutton.
