New bodycam footage released by the Santa Fe County Sheriff's Department showed armorer Hannah Gutierrez Reed in the moments following the shooting of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins. The compromise would adopt the film industry’s firearm safety rules, which are currently voluntary, into state law. It would also mandate specialized training for armorers and others who work with firearms on sets, according to sources familiar with the talks. The two sides have been working for more than a year on the legislation following the death of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins in New Mexico in October 2021.

"Rust" key medic Cheryln Schaefer has filed a lawsuit against the movie's producers as well as several crew members, claiming she can no longer work following her experience on the movie set. Assistant Director Dave Halls, property master Sarah Zachry, armorer Hannah Gutierrez Reed and firearm supplier Seth Kenney have all been named in the suit, alongside Rust Movie Productions, LLC, and the location that production was being filmed on, Bonanza Creek Ranch.
