Michaela Zee Terence Davies, the British filmmaker known for “Distant Voices, Still Lives,” “The Deep Blue Sea” and “The Long Day Closes,” has died. He was 77. The news of Davies’ death was shared on his official Instagram page: “It is with deep sadness that we announce the death of Terence Davies, who died peacefully at home after a short illness, today on 7th October 2023.” Davies was admired for his period films as well as his early autobiographical trilogy about growing up in Liverpool.

The 96th Academy Awards ceremony was held on Sunday, March 10th, in Los Angeles at the Dolby Theater in Los Angeles. And, of course, the “In Memoriam” is always a notable section, known for producing tears but also jeers at all the omissions that seem to occur each year.

The U.K. pics in post will be presented to sales agents, buyers, programmers and representatives from post-production funds.

Karen Cooper, longtime director of New York City’s indie cinema gem Film Forum, says she’s stepping down at a good time, not just for her, but for the business. Despite all the naysayers and after slogging through Covid with the help of federal grants and weathering a slow recovery, Cooper said business is currently pretty lively at the lower Manhattan nonprofit cinema she’s run for the past 50 years.

A long passionate affair with actor Ivor Novello (Jeremy Irvine) and a somewhat more sensitive and empathetic relationship with Stephen Tennant (Calm Lynch) follow before Sassoon marries Hester Gatty (Kate Phillips) and has a son, George (Richard Goulding).

It is interesting to see what artists conjure up later in their lives. “Benediction” is the eighth film from seventy-six-year-old British writer and director Terence Davies.

Every year, we are fortunate enough to see films at festivals that don’t actually get released until a year or so later. One of the standout pictures from last year is “Benediction,” which is finally about to arrive in theaters.

Naman Ramachandran BritBox has picked up “Reel Britannia,” a documentary series on the history of modern British cinema, for the U.S., U.K., Canada and South Africa. The deal was closed by Abacus Media Rights (AMR), an Amcomri Entertainment company, who acquired worldwide distribution rights to the series from director Jon Spira and producer Hank Starrs of Canal Cat Films.

Terence Davies’ lyrical, gorgeous and elegant film “Benediction” is an unusual biopic about British war poet Siegfried Sassoon in that it jumps around in time and finds Sassoon as both a young and old man. And even though the San Sebastian Film Festival begins after both Venice and TIFF, the Spanish event is already shaping up to be a strong festival, as we are getting a small sampling of the lineup that will debut in mid-September.
