‘Fancy Dance’ Review: Lily Gladstone Gives A Tremendous Performance In Indigenous Drama [Sundance]

With her breakout turn as a soulful queer rancher in Kelly Reichardt’s “Certain Women,” Lily Gladstone proved herself to be one of the most unique and affecting performers of the last decade. Although she has worked steadily since it’s ridiculous that it’s taken this long for another role that really allows her tremendous talent to shine.  READ MORE: 25 Most Anticipated Movies At The 2023 Sundance Film Festival Co-written by director Erica Tremblay (“Reservation Dogs”), whose short “Little Chief” also starred Gladstone, and Miciana Alise, the family drama “Fancy Dance” explores the systematic mishandling by the police and the FBI of missing and murdered indigenous women.

‘Radical’ Review: Eugenio Derbez Stars In Heartfelt But Flawed Teaching Drama [Sundance]

While introducing “Radical,” director Christopher Zalla (“Sangre de Mi Sangre”/”Blood of My Blood”) said it was a labor of love. In addition to that, he said it’s a “movie about what happens when kids are empowered.” And while the film definitely explores this in a well-crafted display of filmmaking, it also leaves a bit of a dark shadow in the minds of those allergic to the notion that your mind is all you need to succeed.

‘Magazine Dreams’ Review: Jonathan Majors Shoulders The Weight of This Incel, Bodybuilder Drama [Sundance]

In Greek mythology, it holds that for a time, gods and mortals mingled freely, creating demigods whose sole aim was to prove their worth so they might join their celestial kin. For the Greeks, the gods who ruled on mount Olympus formed the idealized version of humans—often possessing super strength to match their perfect physiques.

The last few years have been great times for documentaries about cults. That does not mean it is a time of introspection about the questing impulses driving people into cults.  The appeal of content—generally of the limited streaming series variety—about cults has more to do with the queasy fright provided by seeing roomfuls of people prostrate themselves before a bored-looking bearded guy on a dais.

The horror genre is littered with creepy kid movies; some, like “The Babadook” and “Us,” are vastly better than others. Unfortunately, even with clear evocations of both those films, “Run Rabbit Run” by director Daina Reid (“Shining Girls”) and screenwriter Hannah Kent is not destined to be a classic of this sub-genre.

‘The Longest Goodbye’ Review: Mars Mission Doc Is A Fascinating Look At Mental Struggles NASA Astronauts Face On Extended Space Expeditions [Sundance]

So, what’s the hold up on humans going to Mars? Is it a technology issue? Is no one volunteering? Is it too dangerous? Is this all Elon Musk’s fault? Believe it or not, what’s stopping humans from going to Mars has little to do with any of those things. Sure, there are loads of physical dangers lurking around every proverbial corner, but if Ido Mizrahy’s “The Longest Goodbye” is anything to go by, the problem with humans getting to Mars is simply, and unsurprisingly, humans themselves.

‘The Pod Generation’ Review; Emilia Clarke & Chiwetel Ejiofor Are Having A Baby In A Thoughtful But Flat Comedy/Drama [Sundance]

“We can’t live in the past!” Rachel (Emilia Clarke) tells her husband Alvy (Chiwetel Ejiofor).  “Things are evolving!” She should know; she spends her days creating AI companions and coordinating automation (her latest big triumph appears to be a combination of virtual assistant, friend, and mood ring). But Alvy, as she puts it, “studies plants… and plant-like things,” taking horticulture students out to fig trees and saying things like, “The texture is completely different when it’s fresh from the tree.” READ MORE: 25 Most Anticipated Films At The Sundance Film Festival So it’s a real opposites-attract situation, the old-school luddite and the literal creator of artificiality, and there are therefore obvious disagreements over her rather unilateral decision to take advantage of her company’s offer to set her up at “The Womb Center” (“It is our hottest perk – we we just want to retain the best and brightest women”).

“Little Richard: I Am Everything” opens with exactly the kind of pre-title sequence we’ve come to expect from a contemporary rock-history bio-doc, a fast and furious assemblage of archival imagery and iconic audio, bits and pieces reminding us of what this figure did, a snatch of a song, a flash of footage, a quick hit of a later legend assuring us of their greatness (“I’d never seen any of it before,” Mick Jagger assures us), bold proclamations (“He created the template for the rock and roll icon”), assembled with sleek grace.

‘The Territory’ Review: Indigenous People Fight Encroaching Deforestation In An Engrossing Doc Portrait

“I consider this land mine,” a Brazilian man, identified by onscreen text as a “settler,” informs the camera at one point during “The Territory.” The land in question is a section of the Amazon rainforest in the state of Rondônia, encircled by modern development, which is, in fact, the homeland and protected territory of the Uru-Eu-Wau-Wau Indigenous people. Whether or not such legally recognized sovereignty is, in Jair Bolsonaro’s Brazil, any match for white vibes is the subject of director Alex Pritz’s first feature, which won an Audience Award and a Jury prize at this January’s Sundance and is an issue-driven documentary gratifyingly interested in action as much as advocacy.

‘God’s Country’ Trailer: Thandiwe Newton Leads A Striking Neo-Realist Sundance Western Coming In September

What does one naturally associate with that most enduring and traditional of genres, the stalwart of American cinema that is the Western? For many, it is the violent exuberance of the European visionaries behind the so-called ‘Spaghetti’ Western, which survived to this day in the films of Quentin Tarantino. For the puritans of this world, the measured craft and sometimes questionable social propaganda of the likes of John Ford comes to mind.

The statistics are shameful, pointing to a systemic racist indifference, and the documentary chronicles the staggering number of times that expectant mothers entering into hospitals simply do not come out alive due to a lack of care and sensitivity.
