Sue Johnston, 79, reveals she has no plans to retire

Coronation Street's Sue Johnston has said it is a 'privilege to grow old' after losing some of her friends of her peers over the years.  She added that she has no plans to retire and while she does lament feeling 'tired', acting still 'excites' her 'after all this time'. During her 40-year acting career, the star has played two different roles in much-loved Coronation Street, once in 1982 when she appeared as Mrs Chadwick and then returning in 2012 as Gloria.

The Royle Family star Sue Johnston has opened up on how difficult it is to watch the once hugely-popular comedy series in the years since fellow star Caroline Aherne sadly died. Sue, who played family matriarch Barbara Royle in the iconic show from 1998 to 2012, was on-screen mum to daughter Denise (played by Caroline), and the pair joined show star Ricky Tomlinson as Jim Royle. Sadly, Caroline, who also created the sitcom, died of cancer after a short battle with the disease in 2016.
