Billie Eilish, Dua Lipa, Olivia Rodrigo and more have received mentions on the shortlist for the 2024 Academy Awards. Yesterday (December 21), the Academy announced its shortlists in 10 categories, including Best Original Song and Best Original Score.

Jon Burlingame Oscar’s music branch has had its say, naming 15 original scores and 15 songs to its shortlist for possible nomination at the 96th Academy Awards, with few surprises. As expected, all three “Barbie” songs that were entered — Billie Eilish’s “What Was I Made For,” Dua Lipa’s “Dance the Night” and Ryan Gosling’s “I’m Just Ken” — made the 15-song list.

Sharon Van Etten has released an emotional new single ‘Close To You’, co-written by Courtney Barnett.The new track was written for the new Apple TV+ series The Buccaneers, which premieres on November 8. The soundtrack reportedly consists of an all-female lineup produced by Stella Mozgawa of Warpaint and featuring Lucius, Gracie Abrams, and Miya Folick.On Instagram, Van Etten said of the song: “It was really an inspiring time to get to write a song with my dear friend Courtney and bring it to life with our fellow cohorts Zach Dawes [The Last Shadow Puppets bassist] and Stella Mozgawa for the show Buccaneers airing very soon,” she wrote.

Marika Hackman has shared her first single in four years, ‘No Caffeine’.The uplifting track is her first new material since her 2019 album ‘Any Human Friend’.“’No Caffeine’ is a list of what to do to avoid having a panic attack and looking at my anxiety as an abusive partner,” said Hackman of the new song.“Occupy your mind / Don’t stay home / Talk to all your friends, but don’t look at your phone / Scream into a bag / Try to turn your brain off,” she sings on the track.The singer-songwriter has also shared a video for the song, which sees her getting a bloody nose before she is physically sick. You can view it below.Despite it being her first new material in four years, Hackman did release a covers album during the pandemic in 2020, featuring songs by Grimes, Sharon Van Etten, The Shins and Beyoncé.“I wanted to spend the majority of lockdown writing my fourth album, but I found it very hard to be creative in that way: to start with a blank page and make something out of nothing,” Hackman told NME at the time about the motivation behind ‘Covers’.

Neither Haim nor Marx was in a position to take anything about the job lightly, given that the eight-episode series for National Geographic and Disney+ tells the story of a Dutch woman, Miep Gies, who helped hide Anne Frank and her family from the Nazis. Yet, in their very separate roles, both found ways to bring musical light or even levity into a drama that inevitably skews toward tension. Este Haim took on the EMP job for the first time with “A Small Light” after previously scoring or co-composing “Maid” and “Cha Cha Smooth” — on top of her day job as one-third of the rocking sister trio Haim. For “A Small Light,” she produced episode-ending covers of songs from the first half of the 20th century, performed by Angel Olsen, Moses Sumney, Kamasi Washington, Sharon Van Etten with Michael Imperioli, Remi Wolf, Weyes Blood, duet partners Orville Peck and King Princess, and her sister Danielle.

Angel Olsen’s sixth studio album, ‘Big Time’, Wilco frontman Jeff Tweedy has shared a lo-fi acoustic cover of its title track.Tweedy’s raw, weathered vocals fit the song affably, retaining the original version’s smoky and melancholic spirit.
