Joe Leydon Film Critic The next time you hear someone complain that they sure don’t make them like they used to, point them in the direction of “Accidental Texan,” an unapologetically old-fashioned feel-good dramedy that, with a few minor tweaks, could pass as a newly rediscovered family-friendly feature from the mid-1970s. Back then, the lead roles probably would have been filled by the likes of, say, Brian Keith and Kurt Russell.

What happens when life doesn’t go according to plan? A young actor finds out after becoming stranded far from his dreams. ”Accidental Texan” follows Erwin, played by Rudy Pankow, as he traverses the unfamiliar Texas landscape.

Brent Lang Executive Editor Roadside Attractions has acquired North American rights to “Accidental Texan,” a comedy about a Harvard grad and actor stranded in the “Lone Star State” where he stumbles into the role of lifetime. The film, which stars Thomas Haden Church and Rudy Pankow, will open in theaters on March 8, 2024. According to the official plot description, “Accidental Texan” kicks off when Erwin (Pankow), a recent Ivy League student, flames out of his first professional acting gig when he forgets to turn off his phone and triggers an explosive nightmare on set.

MTV has announced the nominees for the 2023 MTV Movie & TV Awards. Top Gun: Maverick leads the film side with six nominations. It tied with Stranger Things and The Last Of Us, also with six noms each on the scripted television side. Jersey Shore Family Vacation, RuPaul’s Drag Race, The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills and Vanderpump Rules head up unscripted noms with two each.

Also earning noms this year were first-timers the Cocaine Bear, from “Cocaine Bear,” and creepy murder doll “M3GAN” from “M3GAN.” The MTV Movie & TV Awards returns to Santa Monica’s Barker Hanger for a live telecast on May 7 at 8 p.m. ET. Zack Sharf Chase Stokes is the star of Netflix’s smash hit teen drama “Outer Banks,” but it turns out he missed his chance to be in an even bigger Netflix blockbuster. Speaking to Access Hollywood ahead of “Outer Banks” Season 3 launching on Netflix, Stokes revealed that he auditioned to play Steve Harrington in “Stranger Things” but completely bombed the audition. “I actually read for Steve Harrington,” Stokes said. “I forgot all the lines and absolutely [fucked] up the audition. I drove eight hours from Atlanta back to Orlando regretting every moment of my life on that.” Although “Stranger Things” creators Matt and Ross Duffer decided to write Stokes into the show’s first season, it was for a small non-speaking role in just one episode.
