Owen Gleiberman Chief Film Critic For decades, as I’ve watched Sylvester Stallone on talk shows or caught bits and pieces of promotional interviews with him, my impression, without pondering it much, has been that he’s a dude with a certain charismatic native intelligence. Yet “Sly,” the infectious and fascinating portrait of Stallone and his movies that premiered today at the Toronto Film Festival, is built around an interview with Stallone conducted in his splendid, art-bedecked Mediterranean-style mansion in Beverly Hills (he has since sold it to Adele). And throughout the film, he’s so calmly but blazingly articulate, so candid about the processes of moviemaking and his strengths (and weaknesses) as an actor, so wise about the meaning of his own stardom, that I realized, with a touch of embarrassment, a prejudice I’ve been carrying around for 47 years.

Adele is top-to-bottom renovating the sprawling mansion she bought, which previously belonged to Sylvester Stallone — but one key bit of decor seems like it's going to stick around. As seen in recent photos of the large estate, construction is already well underway, with the mansion essentially gutted and stripped down to the bones. In fact, the renovation project has — at this point — taken off the entire second story of the mansion, and knocked down basically every wall. However, amid the architectural overhaul and construction carnage, two notable features of Stallone's former home remains — the stunning pool and, more importantly, the huge larger than life statue depicting his iconic character, Rocky Balboa, which stands poolside, overlooking the idyllic waters.Adele reportedly bought the home last year for $58 million — a significant savings from the home's original listing price of $110 million, which Stallone then reduced to $80 million before selling to Adele. The property is located in Beverly Park on a 3.6 acre lot featuring scenic views.Recently, Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck closed on a sizable mega-mansion, dropping $60 million on a home in the Wallingford Estates area of Beverly Hills. The lavish mansion also includes an indoor sports complex with a basketball court, a pickleball court, a gym, a boxing ring, a sports lounge and a bar.The property also includes a 5,000-square-foot guest penthouse, a two-bedroom guard house, and a 12-car garage, with additional parking space for up to 80 vehicles, according to the estate listing.

Zack Sharf Digital News Director Michael B. Jordan’s “Creed III” is now playing in theaters, which means a lot of moviegoers may find themselves asking the same question: Where the hell is Sylvester Stallone’s Rocky Balboa? Stallone starred opposite Jordan in “Creed” and “Creed II,” even earning an Oscar nomination for supporting actor thanks to his role in the 2015 first installment. But Stallone is entirely absent from “Creed III.” While Rocky’s name gets name-dropped a couple times in the script, his whereabouts are never explained. Stallone’s absence in “Creed III” marks the first time in nine films and 47 years that a movie in the “Rocky” film franchise does not feature Rocky Balboa. The reason behind Stallone’s departure is twofold: He wasn’t the biggest fan of “Creed III’s” creative direction, and his clash against longtime franchise producer Irwin Winkler remains ongoing.

“Gonna Fly Now” horns.Rocky Balboa was as Philly as cheesesteaks, soft pretzels and the Liberty Bell. He always just existed in the City of Brotherly Love that I knew as a little shorty — back when I went by Chucky instead of Chuck. When word went around my elementary school that they were looking for children to be extras in “Rocky II” — after the first “Rocky” was a box-office smash and beat out such classics as “All the President’s Men,” “Network” and “Taxi Driver” for the Best Picture Oscar in 1977 — I was ready for my close-up.And as “Creed III,” opening Friday, continues the “Rocky” movie legacy — even sans Sylvester Stallone — it takes me back to that day in late 1978 and reminds me why the boxing-film franchise will always hold a special place in my heart.Somehow I talked my parents into me being an extra in the iconic “Rocky II” scene where hundreds of kids run after the fabled boxer and up the famous steps of the Philadelphia Museum of Art.
Owen Gleiberman Chief Film Critic Adonis Creed, like Rocky Balboa before him, is a fighter who faces down his demons and finds his triumph-of-the-human-spirit mojo, all leading up to his inevitable delivery of that knockout punch (well, okay, Rocky actually lost the fight in “Rocky”). The first two “Creed” films, like the six “Rocky” films, were rah-rah crowd-pleasers, with the hero taking on an adversary who represents the forces of darkness. The boxing foes in these movies are a little like comic-book supervillains: Clubber Lang, Ivan Drago, Drago’s vengeful son, and so on. They’ve been catchy and, at times, memorable characters, but it’s part of their appeal that they’re two-dimensional raging-bull enemies you would hardly rank as layered human beings.
