Emily Longeretta For years, film has been featuring the antagonist front and center — see “Joker,” “The Shining,” even “The Godfather” and “GoodFellas.” TV, however, usually works a bit differently. Placing the bad guy at the head of the story isn’t an easy task, one that only works when both the writer and actor at hand can find a way to make the character likable enough to keep an audience’s attention through multiple episodes.Christopher Duntsch, the leading character in Peacock’s “Dr. Death,” isn’t likable in the least. The limited series follows the true story of the neurosurgeon in Texas who injured or killed 33 out of 38 patients in less than two years.“It is exceedingly difficult to find those entry points into the character that audiences can connect to and not just feel like he’s a psychopathic killer,” says showrunner Patrick Macmanus.

Emily Longeretta SPOLER ALERT: Do not read if you have not watched “Blank Spaces,” the May 3 episode of “The Girl From Plainville,” now streaming on Hulu.Hulu’s “The Girl From Plainville” has come to an end. The eight-episode true-crime drama followed the real case of Michelle Carter and Conrad “Coco” Roy III, with the final episode revealing that she has been found guilty of involuntary manslaughter. In a title card at the end, it’s revealed that Michelle began her 15-month sentence in February 2019 and was released early in January 2020 due to good conduct.
Michelle Carter’s (Elle Fanning) fate sealed after she’s convicted of involuntary manslaughter in the death of boyfriend Conrad Roy (Colton Ryan) while the finale also revisited his last day alive. While speaking to ET, Fanning, Ryan as well as creators and showrunners Liz Hannah and Patrick Macmanus broke down “Blank Spaces” and why they wanted to end Carter and Roy’s complicated relationship with that powerful fantasy sequence. As Carter faced her final days in court, the series jumped back in time to Roy’s final day alive before dying by suicide. For everyone else, it’s just a normal day, but for Roy, it’s an opportunity to indulge in the things he loves, from playing video games to spending time with his mom on the beach, where he tries guacamole for the first time. “We knew at the point in time that we wrote the pilot we were pretty certain that the finale was going to have Conrad’s last day,” Macmanus says.
Kate Aurthur editorWhen Chloë Sevigny was first approached about playing a role in Hulu’s limited series “The Girl From Plainville,” she Googled the real-life case behind it — how the relationship between Michelle Carter and Coco Roy resulted in Roy’s death by suicide in 2014 — to jog her memory, and found herself jarred instead when she came upon a photo of Carter.“I remember seeing her in magazines, and immediately thinking she was guilty, and being, like, ‘What a bitch,’” Sevigny said with a laugh. “So like, wow: I’m really complicit in seeing this beautiful blonde girl and thinking that just because she’s beautiful and blonde, she’s a demon.”On the series, Sevigny plays Lynn Roy, the bereft mother of Coco Roy (Colton Ryan).
The Peacock limited series Dr. Death stars Christian Slater as Randy Kirby, one of the doctors who exposed Dr. Christopher Duntsch (Joshua Jackson)’s malpractice. Series creator Patrick McManus said the real Dr. Kirby was very sure of the story’s merits for television.
Michelle Carter’s story, which is being depicted in the Hulu series starring Elle Fanning, there’s no denying the influence and its star Lea Michele had on the teenager who was ultimately convicted of involuntary manslaughter for the 2014 death of boyfriend Conrad Roy (Colton Ryan). After a brief moment, in which Carter recites a popular monologue in the premiere, episode four (“Can’t Fight This Feeling”) takes Carter’s fascination even further with a dream sequence involving Fanning and Colton performing a cover of REO Speedwagon. While speaking with ET, Fanning and Colton as well as creators Liz Hannah and Patrick Macmanus break down that unexpected musical moment and why bringing Carter’s pop culture obsession to life on screen was so important to the series. About halfway through the episode, after the Assistant District Attorney in Massachusetts opened an investigation into Carter’s involvement in Roy’s death and she’s no longer allowed to use the internet or communicate with anyone involved in the case, a lonely Carter goes for a walk outside.
