The suspect in the killing of former Netflix staffer and Array consultant Michael Latt this week has been revealed by the LAPD, as has the victim himself.

On Monday, some sharp-eyed members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences were surprised by a small but perhaps significant twist in an invitation to recommend recipients for the next round of honorary Oscars.

Angela Bassett, Mel Brooks and Carol Littleton received honorary Oscars, while the Sundance Institute’s Michelle Satter was bestowed with the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award.

The Governors Awards of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences is always one of the annual Hollywood nights I look forward to, one that delivers Honorary Oscars in a non-televised but always warm, fun, and inspiring evening. I have attended every single one of them, and even wrote the 2nd Governors Awards, but I have to say Tuesday night’s 14th annual ceremony had an extra personal and devastatingly heartfelt kick to it, quite unforseen when the Academy’s Board Of Governors announced their honorees -97 year old Mel Brooks, Film Editor Carol Littleton, Angela Bassett, and Sundance Institute’s Michelle Satter – way back on June 26.

Following his tragic passing last month, the family of Michael Latt and the CAA Foundation today announced the formation of the Michael Latt Legacy Fund.

Gene Maddaus Senior Media Writer Michael Latt, a film marketing consultant who worked closely with Ryan Coogler and Common on a series of social justice campaigns, was shot and killed at his home on Monday night, the LAPD has confirmed. Latt, 33, was the founder and CEO of Lead With Love, a social impact marketing agency. In addition to Coogler and Common, he worked with Ava DuVernay, Barry Jenkins, and studios like Warner Bros.

The Hollywood community is in a state of shock and mourning for Michael Latt, the Lead With Love chief exec who was murdered on his doorstep Monday night.

In what is clearly a strike-related delay, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences has moved the 14th Annual Governors Awards forward two months to Tuesday, January 9, 2024, still to be held at the Fairmont Century Plaza in Los Angeles. The Academy’s official press release made no mention of a reason for the delay, but sources have been telling me discussions have been in the works and it is clearly due to the strike situation which continues to wreak havoc to many aspects of the industry and its events.

Angela Bassett may have gone home empty handed at the Oscars in March, but the two-time nominee will be getting a golden statuette this year after all – and in very good company too.

Angela Bassett is getting her long-awaited Oscar! Bassett was first nominated for an Academy Award for her portrayal of Tina Turner in 1993's and the actress has been a prominent figure in Hollywood for the past 40 years — garnering another Oscar nomination for her role in 2022's . On Monday, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced that Bassett, as well as Mel Brooks and Carol Littleton, will receive an honorary Oscar at this year's Governors Awards. The ceremony will also honor Sundance Institute’s Michelle Satter with the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award. The 14th annual Governors Awards is set to take place on Saturday, Nov.

It took a few more months, but Angela Bassett finally “did the thing.” The two-time Oscar nominee has been awarded an honorary Oscar by the Board of Governors of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. She joins fellow honorary Oscar winners Mel Brooks and Carol Littleton as well as Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award winner Michelle Satter.

Actor Angela Bassett, writer-director-actor Mel Brooks and film editor Carol Littleton will receive honorary Oscars and the Sundance Institute’s Michelle Satter will receive the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award at the Academy’s 2023 Governors Awards, the Academy announced on Monday.The recipients were chosen by the Academy’s Board of Governors, and the awards will be presented at the 14th annual Governors Awards ceremony, which will take place on Nov. 18 at the Fairmont Century Plaza in Los Angeles.Bassett has been nominated for Oscars for “What’s Love Got to Do With It” and “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.” Her other films include “Boyz N the Hood,” “Waiting to Exhale,” “How Stella Got Her Groove Back” and “Soul.”Brooks won an Oscar for the screenplay to his first film, “The Producers,” and has also been nominated for his screenplay to “Young Frankenstein” and for the title song to “Blazing Saddles.” He also wrote for Sid Caesar’s television shows, created the television series “Get Smart” and turned “The Producers” into a long-running and Tony-winning Broadway musical.

EXCLUSIVE: The nonprofit Sundance Institute announced the eight women selected for the 2023 Sundance Women to Watch x Adobe Fellowship. They were all chosen for their exceptional talent and commitment to furthering their creative practice.

Julia MacCary editor Blumhouse and K Period Media have announced the inaugural fellows for its “Screamwriting” program for emerging horror film and TV writers from underrepresented groups. The program, in partnership with the Sundance Institute, provides mentorship for the participants from industry leaders including Ryan Murphy, Bridget Savage Cole, Danielle Krudy, Mike Flanagan and Crystal Liu. “Some of the most daring storytelling is being created today in the horror genre,” said Michelle Satter, founding senior director of Sundance Institute’s artist programs, in a statement. “This great collaboration with K Period Media Foundation and Blumhouse is an opportunity for Sundance to continue and expand on our existing work and support their creation of the ‘Screamwriting’ fellowship.”

Today the nonprofit Sundance Institute announced the eight participants selected for the fifth annual Momentum Fellowship, a program designed to support and provide coaching to mid-career artists with a focus on career development during a pivotal moment in their creative practice. 

The Sundance Institute has named the participants and projects set for the 2023 editions of a pair of its flagship programs: the Screenwriters Lab and Screenwriters Intensive.

The Sundance Institute has set the eight Fellows and projects for its 2022 Episodic Program, which will further the development of four live-action dramas, two live-action comedies, one adult animated comedy and one adult animated sci-fi thriller. The participants are Britt Adams (Onyx), Gianmarco Giacomelli (To Kill a Pope), Naomi Ko (The 20-Year Curse), Ricardo Pérez González (Orlando), Samantha Clay (The Growth), Stephanie Adams-Santos (Sad Girl), Sylvia Batey Alcalá (Blue Neptune) and Tea Ho (Oriental Town). 

Sundance Institute and Hartbeat have selected Mayanna Berrin, Kiana Butler Jabangwe and Danielle Solomon as the recipients of the “Women Write Now” fellowship for Black female comedic screenwriters.Logan Browning (“The Perfection”, “Dear White People”), Tika Sumpter (“Sonic the Hedgehog,” “Mixed-Ish”) and Nicole Byer (“Nailed It,” “A Black Lady Sketch Show”) have signed on to direct three short films written by the fellows, which will debut at a special exhibition during the 2023 Sundance Film Festival.Additionally, the fellows have been awarded a one-year first-look deal with Hartbeat, the multi-platform media company founded by Kevin Hart.Browning will partner with Solomon on her project “Hey Boo,” which follows a top Atlanta braider with a tendency to cancel on clients, who must braid her way out of being canceled by one of the biggest social media influencers. Sumpter is directing Kiana Butler Jabangwe’s “Night Off,” about two new parents who try to enjoy their first night away from their newborn.

Longtime Sundance Institute staffer Adam Piron has been named as the Director of its Indigenous Program. Piron will will lead Sundance’s engagement and investment in global Indigenous storytellers, taking over a role that Bird Runningwater left several months ago. While handling his new responsibilities, he will continue to serve as a short film programmer for the Sundance Film Festival.

The Sundance Institute has set Marissa Chibás (72), Walé Oyéjidé, Esq. (Chiaroscuro), Glenn Kaino (Fox & Stork), Mamoudou N’Diaye (Freelancers), Gabby Rivera (Juliet Takes a Breath), Nuhash Hamuyun (Moving Bangladesh), Tania Taiwo (Pharmacopeia), Andre Muir and Jake Hutton (The Predicament), Tommy Pico and Tazbah Rose Chavez (Sometimes), A.K. Espada (This Is Our Home) and Ramzi I. Bashour (Tomahawk Springs) as the participants for its tenth annual, two-day Screenwriters Intensive, taking place virtually through tomorrow.

The workshop is led by Michelle Satter, the founding senior director of the Sundance Institute’s Artist Programs, as well as Ilyse McKimmie, the deputy director of the Feature Film Program.“We’re thrilled to be bringing together such a dynamic and memorable group of storytellers developing work with bold vision and unique, necessary perspectives,” McKimmie said in a statement.

The Sundance Institute has been named as the recipient of the American Cinema Editors’ 2022 Golden Eddie Award—breaking ground as the first film organization ever to earn the ACE Eddie Awards’ top honor.
