IFC Films has acquired North American rights to the sci-fi pic Biosphere, marking the feature directorial debut of award-winning producer Mel Eslyn (The One I Love). The film is slated for release in 2023, and will stream exclusively on AMC+ following its debut in theaters.

EXCLUSIVE: Duplass Brothers Production recently wrapped production on the Katie Aselton-directed feature Magic Hour, starring Daveed Diggs (Blindspotting, Hamilton). Aselton (Old Dads, Legion) stars alongside Diggs in the project which she co-wrote with Mark Duplass.

SeriesFest has set its lineup and it now includes the likes of New Amsterdam star Jocko Sims and creator David Schulner, All American’s Nkechi Okoro Carroll and Dr. Death creator Patrick Macmanus.

At one point in his career, he would get greenlight after greenlight for the TV projects he pitched on behalf of Duplass Brothers Productions, the beloved indie banner he founded with Jay Duplass in the late ’90s, when the duo was focused on feature films. But recently, he and company president Mel Eslyn noticed a problem.

Dennis Harvey Film Critic In the diverse annals of survivalist cinema, one lesson is clear: Death is surely preferable to an eternity (or even 95 minutes) spent trapped with the inimitable duo of Pauly Shore and Stephen Baldwin in 1996’s “Bio-Dome.” By contrast, the dystopian-future-style living is pretty easy to take in “Biosphere,” given the more amiable company of stars Sterling K. Brown and Mark Duplass. They play besties stuck for the long haul in a self-sustaining habitat after some murky catastrophe has rendered the world outside lethal.  This first directorial feature for producer Mel Eslyn (who co-wrote with Duplass) is a somewhat uneven construct that at times threatens to exhaust its bro-comedy goodwill. But ultimately the performers are winning enough, and the ideas in the ambiguous story intriguing enough, to achieve an end result of successful middleweight charm and substance.

Charna Flam At the “Biosphere” premiere on Tuesday, Sterling K. Brown teased his television series reunion with “This Is Us” creator Dan Fogelman. It has been reported that the new series will be a thriller with Brown starring as the head of security to a president. Brown earned an Emmy for his work as Randall on “This Is Us” in 2017. “It’s not Randall. The character is completely different, completely different milieu.” Brown said of the new series. “But you know Dan — he can’t help but throw some heart in there. There is always going to be heart.” Brown also touched on working with Jennifer Lopez in the sci-fi thriller, “Atlas,” not long after she married Ben Affleck.

Brent Lang Executive Editor Gravitas Ventures has acquired North American rights to Megan Griffiths’” I’ll Show You Mine,” a Duplass Brothers Productions film, starring Poorna Jagannathan and Casey Thomas Brown. The drama will be released in theaters and on demand on June 23, 2023. “I’ll Show You Mine” follows an author who has made a career by examining her own trauma as she sits down to interview her beguiling pansexual nephew Nick for a new book about his history as a model. Over the course of a weekend, the two challenge each other to confront and reveal their buried secrets.   “‘I’ll Show You Mine’ was made to engage in an entertaining way with universal themes–sexuality, the effects of trauma, and the need to release the shame that holds us back. It’s a deeply hopeful film that I think will really resonate with audiences and I just couldn’t be more excited to partner with Gravitas to get it out into the world,” stated director Megan Griffiths.

If you’re going to spend the apocalypse with someone, you might as well do it with your BFF, right? Though that could potentially get really weird. That’s the premise of “Biosphere,” a new IFC Films movie that premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival last year and stars Sterling K.

The end of the world seems to be a topic that will always be interesting to delve into in films and TV series. But most of those stories take place in the post-apocalypse with people scavenging for food and doing horrible things to stay alive.

Brown and Mark Duplass, the company announced on Monday.Set in the not-too-distant future, Duplass and Brown play the last two men on earth who must adapt and evolve to save humanity.“Biosphere” premiered at the Toronto Film Festival in September to a strong audience response and enthusiastic reviews.The film was produced by Eslyn, artist/filmmaker Zackary Drucker—who previously co-directed the Duplass Brothers-produced docuseries “The Lady and the Dale”—and Duplass Brothers Productions’ Shuli Harel and Maddie Buis.

**This review may contain some potential unavoidable spoilers about the basics of “Biosphere,’ spoilerphobes, please beware and return after you have seen the movie.** A film like “Biosphere” poses a genuine conundrum for the film critic, who is tasked with the job of describing, in some detail, a film that counts among its best qualities the element of absurdist surprise. Its only plot description at the time of this writing, on the TIFF website (where it was added, quite close to the festival, as a “special surprise screening”), reads simply, “In the not-too-distant future, the last two men on earth must adapt and evolve to save humanity.” Well, that sounds like any number of science fiction pictures, while “in the not-too-distant future” recalls “Mystery Science Theater 3000.” The film itself falls somewhere in between.

Veteran producer Mel Eslyn’s feature directorial debut Biosphere, starring Emmy winners Sterling K. Brown (This Is Us) and Mark Duplass (The Morning Show), will be making its world premiere as a surprise Special Presentation at the 47th edition of the Toronto Film Festival. The film will make its festival bow in the Visa Screening Room at the Princess of Wales Theatre at 2:30 p.m. on September 10th.

Lee Jung-jae of the breakout Netflix hit “Squid Game” and Thuso Mbedu from “The Underground Railroad” took home series acting awards. The 37th show was in keeping with the Spirit Awards’ history of celebrating films and (more recently) television series that embody the independent spirit through a combination of financing, creativity and subject matter.

Selome Hailu HBO announced that “Somebody Somewhere” has been renewed for a second season.The comedy series debuted on Jan. 16 and will air its Season 1 finale on Feb.
