Emmy-winning comedian and writer Larry Wilmore hosted the event and introduced this year’s 11 winners, including writers behind the series “Mrs. Davis,” “Fleishman is in Trouble” and “Tiny Beautiful Things.” But before the awards were handed out, Wilmore took a moment to pay tribute to Lear.

In a series of funny remarks that took on everything from Don Lemon to Fox News Channel’s massive $787.5 million settlement to Dominion Voting to President Biden’s age, Wood devoted significant time to calling for support for local journalism, noting that reporters working for regional and local media outlets are often the first to spot malfeasance or something wrong. He also mentioned his father’s work in local radio and his mother’s career in education. The comments added a personal touch to the proceedings, which are organized each year by the White House Correspondents Association and meant to call attention to the mission of holding government officials accountable in reporting meant to be consumed by the American public.

BreAnna Bell Onyx Collective’s “Reasonable Doubt” has been renewed for Season 2 and will be bringing in Morris Chestnut (“The Best Man”) as a series regular, Variety has confirmed. Chestnut will play charming, media-savvy defense attorney Corey Cash, whose client roster is typically full of underdogs. After bringing Corey in to help on a high-profile case, Jax learns he could threaten her standing at the firm. The series follows Los Angeles-based criminal defense attorney, Jax Stewart (Emayatzy Corinealdi) as she faces untapped trauma from her past, her struggling marriage, motherhood, and how she manages to juggle it all while maintaining her polished career. In addition to Corinealdi, Angela Grovey, Tim Jo, McKinley Freeman, Aderinsola Olabode and Thaddeus J. Mixson also star.

Selome Hailu Robin Thede, creator and star of “A Black Lady Sketch Show,” has set a new comedy series for development at HBO. The half-hour project is titled “Disengagement,” and centers on the prestigious Cole family after a very public and embarrassing business implosion shatters their perfect Midwest image. Per the logline, it was just an image, because behind closed doors, even their dysfunction has dysfunction, proving family is the ultimate pyramid scheme. Thede serves as writer and executive producer of the series, which she is developing via the overall deal she signed with HBO in 2022. Meghan Cheek produces on behalf of For Better or Words, Inc.

The winners included the Ambies’ Podcast of the Year: “Chameleon: Wild Boys,” from Campside Media and Sony Music Entertainment, which tells the incredible true story of two half-starved brothers who emerged from the wilderness to be taken in by a Canadian community — except that the boys weren’t who they said they were. Winners in other top categories included Nicole Byer’s “Why Won’t You Date Me?” (comedy), “Business Wars” (business), “Bone Valley” (documentary), “Scamfluencers” (entertainment) and “Last Known Position” (fiction).

HBO’s Emmy Award-winning comedy Insecure, starring series’ co-creator Issa Rae and Yvonne Orji, will begin airing two back-to-back episodes on Tuesday night on OWN. It premieres on Tuesday, February 7 at 9:00 p.m. ET/ PT with the show’s pilot episode titled “Insecure As F**k.”

Quinta Brunson has won her first Emmy Award. The creator, writer, and star of ABC's has made history as the second Black woman to win television's highest award for Outstanding Writing for a Comedy Series. Brunson took the stage and humbly thanked the networks that trusted in her vision to tell this story.

In her show’s first season, Quinta Brunson won the Emmy for Outstanding Writing For a Comedy Series tonight, making her only the second Black woman to win in the category after Lena Waithe, and the first to win solo. Waithe shared her win in 2017 with Aziz Ansari for an episode of Master of None, titled “Thanksgiving”.

The writers behind ABC’s Black-ish, Apple TV+’s Pachinko, Disney’s Oscar-winning Encanto and Adam McKay’s satire Don’t Look Up are among the winners of the 46th annual Humanitas Prizes. The honors were bestowed Friday afternoon in a ceremony at the Beverly Hilton.

Held at the Beverly Hilton Hotel and hosted by comedian Larry Wilmore, the 46th annual Humanitas Prize event centered on awards and $10,000 cash prizes to screenwriters across ten categories. In addition, Humanitas board president Jenny Bicks presented Filmmakers for Ukraine with the Kieser Award “in recognition of their work to connect the Ukrainian film and TV community impacted by the Russo-Ukrainian War with resources, jobs, and funding to meet basic needs.”

After Quinta Brunson made history by becoming the first Black woman to be nominated for comedy series, acting and writing categories in the same year, she would be only the second Black person ever to win as a producer in the comedy series. The first was Winifred Hervey for “The Golden Girls” back in 1987. Also, forecast to go along with the top category a win for writing (Brunson would be the third Black person after Larry Wilmore for “The Bernie Mac Show” in 2002 and Lena Waithe for “Master of None” in 2017) and Sheryl Lee Ralph in supporting actress (she would be the second Black woman to win the category after Jackee Harry for “227” in 1987).

Since its debut in 2016, Insecure has garnered critical acclaim for telling the story of the Black female experience via its two leads, Issa (Issa Rae) and Molly (Yvonne Orji). After five seasons and 11 Emmy nominations, Insecure had its series finale in December of last year.

Rosenthal’s mother, Helen Rosenthal, was there alongside her husband Max for the bits in Seasons 1 and 2.
