Variety has learned exclusively that Ryan Hurst, Michael Greyeyes, Michiel Huisman, and Toby Hemingway have all joined the Netflix series in recurring roles. Anderson joins previously announced star Lena Headey in the show, which was first picked up to series at the streamer in October 2022. According to an individual with knowledge of the situation, Anderson’s deal was in the works prior to the beginning of the writers’ strike but only recently closed. The official series description states: “As a group of diverse, outlier families pursue their Manifest Destiny in 1850s Oregon, a corrupt force of wealth and power, coveting their land, tries to force them out. These abandoned souls, the kind of lost souls living on the fringe of society, unite their tribes to form a family and fight back. In this bloody process, “justice” is stretched beyond the boundaries of the law.”

McKinley Franklin editor JD Pardo is set to make his directorial debut with the upcoming Season 5 of FX’s gritty biker drama “Mayans M.C.,” Variety can exclusively reveal. Pardo has starred in “Mayans M.C.” since its premiere in 2018. For the fifth and final season of the series, Pardo will make his directorial debut during the show’s fourth episode, which will air on Wednesday, June 7. Episode 4, entitled “I See the Black Light,” teases that “after a fatal error, the Mayans navigate the dangers of their new trade, forcing an unlikely alliance.” Meredith Danluck wrote the episode. Elgin James and Kurt Sutter are executive producers and creators.

The official series description states: “As a group of diverse, outlier families pursue their Manifest Destiny in 1850s Oregon, a corrupt force of wealth and power, coveting their land, tries to force them out. These abandoned souls, the kind of lost souls living on the fringe of society, unite their tribes to form a family and fight back. In this bloody process, ‘justice’ is stretched beyond the boundaries of the law.” Headey will play Fiona, described as “a strong, devout matriarch who, unable to have her own children, took in four orphans to create her own family. Driven by a higher purpose – and a strong-willed Irish temper – her faith and love for her family trump all.”

The show was first reported to be in development at the streaming giant back in November 2021. Netflix has given the show a 10 episode order. The show’s official logline states: “As a group of diverse, outlier families pursue their Manifest Destiny in 1850s Oregon, a corrupt force of wealth and power, coveting their land, tries to force them out. These abandoned souls, the kind of lost souls living on the fringe of society, unite their tribes to form a family and fight back. In this bloody process, ‘justice’ is stretched beyond the boundaries of the law. The Abandons will explore that fine line between survival and law, the consequences of violence, and the corrosive power of secrets, as this family fights to keep their land.”

The elevator pitch for FX’s “Mayans M.C.” is simple—a spinoff of the hugely popular biker drama, “Sons of Anarchy,” the new show follows a Mexican-American motorcycle club from Southern California who dabbles in a bit of drug-running for cartels and battling the authorities. And for the first two seasons, that’s exactly what it was.

It can be fascinating to see how spin-off shows evolve from their original source material. Take “Better Call Saul” on AMC taking off from “Breaking Bad.” Some even consider the former to be as potent and captivating as the latter, if not more so.

Created by Kurt Sutter and Elgin James, and spawned from the same fictional universe as “Sons of Anarchy,” dealing with the Sons’ rivals-turned-allies, “Mayans M.C.” has really come into its own in recent years and even changed its tone in recent years as Elgin James has taken over as sole showrunner. Building up viewership and popularity over time, “Mayans M.C.” is about to be in its fourth season, which debuts on F.X.
