Queen of Tears.Today (March 27), Hankook Ilbo via The Korea Times reported that Kim Soo-hyun was paid about KRW300million per episode of his new K-drama series, Queen of Tears. That comes to a total of about KRW5billion over the show’s 16-episode run.According to the news outlet, the actor’s salary for the new K-drama is lower than the KRW500million he was reportedly paid for the 2021 series One Ordinary Day.

Other cast members include Jang Da-ah, Ryu Da-in, Shin Seul-ki and Kang Na-eon.Pyramid Game will have its European premiere at Series Mania in March, following its debut in Korea on TVING last month.Along with the similarities in title, Pyramid Game and Squid Game are both Korean dramas which share similar survival themes – with the former set in the hierachy of a school, while the latter serves as commentary on capitalist society at large.The huge success of Squid Game has also led to a chase to replicate its success, with the existence of Pyramid Game likely being a byproduct of its popularity.The series has also received some positive early buzz.

Patrick Frater Asia Bureau Chief K-pop girl group Blackpink has finally signed renewed contracts with YG Entertainment.The news was revealed in a regulatory filing by the company on Wednesday and caused its KOSDAQ-listed shares to leap by 26% to KRW60,700 by midday. “The board has completed a resolution about renewing the contracts with Blackpink’s four members,” YG said in the filing. In a press statement the company said that Blackpink plans a new album and a world tour. “We are pleased to continue our relationship with Blackpink,” YG founder Yang Hyun Suk said in the statement.

The news was widely reported in Korea on Monday and comes after months of speculation that the four-piece act – Jisoo (real name Kim Ji-soo), Lisa (Lalisa Manobal), Jennie (Kim Jennie) and Rose (Roseanne Park) – would take their acts to another shop. Blackpink’s previous contracts with YG expired in August. The Munhwa Ilbo (or Culture Daily) publication Monday claimed an exclusive with the information that Blackpink will re-up with YG, but the four individuals will not renew their exclusive contracts with the agency.

Persona: Sulli, a documentary film starring late K-pop star Sulli, will premiere on Netflix in November.Today (October 26), Netflix confirmed that Persona: Sulli will be released on the streaming platform next month. According to a report from Korea JoongAng Daily, the film will be split into two parts.The first is a short film called 4: Clean Island, which stars the late Sulli as the titular “4”, who travels to an island that is dubbed the cleanest place in the world.

Big Hit Music trainees have opened up about the members of BTS and whether the septet have changed since their debut.In a new interview with Korea Now, the English-language YouTube channel of South Korean news outlet Yonhap News Agency, former Big Hit Music trainees Kim Ji-hoon and Hwang Ji-hwan opened up about their experiences at the K-pop agency and training alongside the now-BTS members.Kim spoke about how he sometimes watches clips of BTS on YouTube, nothing that the septet are “the same as they used to be” when they were all trainees together. He added that, even then, he thought BTS leader RM “had leadership qualities”.

The one who does ballet? She died.” Later, she receives an ominous package from Min-hee, with a note that reads: “Please get revenge for me!”We’re then introduced by Choi Pro, through a montage of him working out and showing off this strength. “There’s something I need to do,” Ok-ju says in voiceover, following by a scene of her cocking a gun.

K-pop boyband ZEROBASEONE have released a music video teaser for their debut single ‘In Bloom’.On July 6, the nine-member group released the first teaser for their music video for ‘In Bloom’. The song is the lead single from their upcoming debut mini-album ‘Youth in the Shade’, which will be released at the same time as the music video on July 10 at 6pm KST.The teaser clip opens with the ZEROBASEONE members waking up in a room overgrown with plants.

Rebecca Souw Korea’s leading entertainment company, CJ ENM has appointed Choi Ju-hui as CEO of the TVing streaming service in which it has a controlling stake, following the recent resignation of CEO Jay Yang. Choi becomes the first female CEO in the Korean OTT platform business. Choi’s appointment also follows completion of the merger between TVing and Seezn, a smaller streamer previously owned by local telco giant, KT Corp. The merger is expected to bring cost savings in marketing and customer acquisition, benefitting from KT’s network of 14 million subscribers.

Netflix has beefed up the cast of Squid Game season 2, adding 8 new stars to the upcoming season.

VIXX rapper Ravi has admitted to recent charges of attempting evading military service.In January, The Korea Times reported that the 30-year-old idol had been identified by prosecutors as a possible client of a broker known as Mr Gu, who was indicted for helping men receive exemptions from South Korea’s compulsory military service by falsifying health records.Gu reportedly promoted his services by sharing that a famous idol rapper had utilised their service, and consequently received a grade IV in his fitness and health evaluation, allowing him to serve in the social services department instead of becoming an active duty soldier.Back in October 2022, Ravi had announced his enlistment as a social service worker due to unspecified “health reasons”.Following the news reports, Ravi’s self-founded agency GROOVL1N released a statement that it was “closely examining the truth about the situation”, adding that the idol would cooperate fully in the investigation. At the time, neither the agency nor Ravi confirmed or denied the claims of his alleged attempt to evade service.According to Newsis, Ravi admitted to violating South Korea’s Military Service Act at the Seoul Southern District Court on March 6.

Inspired by 2010 real estate crises, the film deals with the ordeals of losing a home yet extending compassion to one another. Featuring Kim Sunyoung (“Broker,” “Three Sisters”) and Lee Yoonji (“Good Morning” and hit TV series, “Extraordinary Attorney Woo”), “Dream Palace” is premiering at the Busan festival’s Panorama section.
