Ellise Shafer Former Paralympic champion and convicted murderer Oscar Pistorius has been granted parole and will be released from prison next year. Pistorius, who was serving a 13-year sentence in a South African jail for the 2013 murder of his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp, will be released on Jan. 5.

Naman Ramachandran Keshet International (KI) has racked up several deals for scripted formats and finished tape in the Central and Eastern Europe region. KI has sold the format rights for Duo Productions’ 8 x 60’ relationship thriller “Too Much Love” (“L’homme qui aimait trop”) to Slovakian free-to-air broadcaster TV JOJ. Originally created by Canadian writing duo Michel d’Astous and Anne Boyer (“Taboo”) for Bell Media’s Quebecois streamer Noovo, the Slovakian adaptation will be produced by Piknik Pictures (“Traffic Light”). Currently in pre-production, with casting in progress, shooting will commence later this year ahead of a 2024 premiere on TV JOJ.
Elsa Keslassy International Correspondent Keshet International has scored a pair of high profile deals on its true crime documentary series, “My Name is Reeva: I Was Murdered by Oscar Pistorius.” Directed by Warren Batchelor (“204: Getting Away With Murder”), the three-part docu series tells the intimate story of Reeva Steenkamp who was allegedly murdered by her then-boyfriend Oscar Pistorius on Valentine’s Day in 2013. “My Name is Reeva” has been sold by Keshet International to Channel 4 in the U.K. and SBS in Australia. Channel 4 has licensed the linear and SVOD rights for its streaming service All 4, while SBS has picked up broadcast and streaming rights and will premiere it on April 17. Discussions are ongoing with other potential broadcast partners.

Espresso is also handling global distribution, with sales to Japan (NHK) and Estonia (ERR) confirmed. The pic is currently in release in Germany. Directed by climate activist turned filmmaker Rich Felgate, the film follows concerned citizens in Germany who step forward to save an ancient forest from one of Europe’s biggest coal mines. However, the local citizens also form an unlikely alliance with a frustrated community in rural northeast England who are forced into action to protect their homes from a new opencast coal mine.
