Ninja Tune CEO steps back from role amidst internal investigation

Ninja Tune CEO Adrian Kemp has stepped away from his role pending an internal investigation into allegations against him.The London-based independent record label, founded by Matt Black and Jonathan More, is currently home to acts such as Young Fathers, Black Country, New Road, Kae Tempest and Bonobo.In a statement sent to staff (via Resident Advisor), Ninja Tune confirmed that Kemp would be taking a “step back” while an “independent third-party HR” company investigated the claims.He’ll temporarily depart the CEO role to not “prejudice this investigation in any way”, a letter from his solicitors read (via Mixmag).The details of the allegations are not known currently, but the document stated that Kemp “vehemently denies” the claims.Samantha Sissons, Ninja Tune’s Head Of Marketing, will step up to his role alongside the label’s Head Of Marketing Operations, Tess Kendall.“The outcome of the investigation will be made available upon completion subject to any legal barriers,” according to the statement to staff. “Adrian will continue to work in support of Sam and Tess but with a lower profile.”Kemp has worked at Ninja Tune for over 20 years and became CEO in 2017, per Companies House.Founded in 1990, Ninja Tune is one of dance music’s most successful independent labels.

BBC has released a series of first look images of This Town, the new drama series from Peaky Blinders creator Steven Knight.Set in 1981, the six-part series centres on a band’s formation against a backdrop of violence, and is described as a love letter to Birmingham and Coventry, featuring fierce new music.The cast is led by a number of rising stars, including Levi Brown (Loss and Return), Jordan Bolger (The Woman King), Ben Rose (Line of Duty) and Eve Austin (You) as its four young leads.This Town also stars Michelle Dockery (Downton Abbey), Nicholas Pinnock (Marcella), and David Dawson (My Policeman).In the first look images, the one above shows leads Ben Rose as Bardon Quinn, Jordan Bolger as Gregory Williams and Levi Brown as Dante Williams walking down a street.Another image shows Brown as Dante Williams in a record store, and in a third photo he’s pictured sharing a moment with Austin’s Jeannie Keefe in a dressing room.Dockery’s Estella and Pinnock’s Deuce Williams are also pictured getting ready to perform. BBC Arts has unveiled a lineup of documentaries for its ‘Arena’ strand that will appear on BBC Two and the BBC iPlayer this spring, and which includes new films about Little Richard and Kae Tempest.‘Little Richard: King And Queen Of Rock N Roll’ will examine the life and career of the rock n roll musician, featuring interviews with Ringo Starr, Keith Richards, Nile Rodgers and Big Freedia, as well as a previously unaired interview with Little Richard himself.Shot over several years, the Kae Tempest documentary offers a glimpse into the life and creative process of the poet, rapper and playwright.Suzy Klein, Head Of Arts And Classical Music TV, says: “’Arena’ is back with a focus on the icons, works, people and moments we think we all know, but where there are still rich and surprising stories to tell”.“I hope audiences will be as gripped by this latest series of films as we are”, she goes on, “and I’m so proud to be working with some of the UK’s leading filmmakers at the height of their careers, championing the best of British documentary-making”.Mark Bell, Commissioning Editor of the series adds: “Creativity is at the heart of ‘Arena’ – and here we have some intriguing cultural subjects paired with a set of brilliant directors, and the resulting films are surprising, bold, and highly individual”.The documentaries are set to air this spring.

Lil Uzi Vert has quietly confirmed that they now use the gender-neutral pronoun set they/them/theirs.The rapper is yet to share a statement or speak publicly about the change, but took to Instagram over the weekend to update the pronouns displayed on their profile.A majority of people that use they/them pronouns – which you can learn more about here – are non-binary, genderfluid or agender, however this is not strictly necessary for someone to prefer those pronouns for theirself.
