The Sex Lives of College Girls is back!
Ellise Shafer Leighton is leaving Essex College. “The Sex Lives of College Girls” star Reneé Rapp will not be returning as a series regular to the Max comedy, Variety has confirmed. Rapp, who plays wealthy legacy student Leighton, will appear in a few episodes of Season 3 as a recurring character but will then depart the show. Renewed for Season 3 in December, “The Sex Lives of College Girls” follows four roommates at the fictional Essex College as they juggle school, sexuality and friendships. Season 2 left off with Leighton finally hitting her stride after coming out as a lesbian to her father and quitting her sorority.

William Earl Variety’s annual Showrunners Dinner will return in-person on Sept. 8, to celebrate the year in television ahead of the 74th Emmy Awards. The event will be presented by A+E Studios and will feature opening remarks by Barry Jossen, president and head of A+E Studios. The Creative Conscience Award will be given to writer and producer David E. Kelley for his prolific career in television. David remains one of the most influential figures in television – having created iconic roles for women in “Ally McBeal,” “Big Little Lies” and “Big Sky.” Kelley is a trailblazer for creating complex female characters on television, especially in his early career when such characters were unknown in primetime television.
Naman Ramachandran “Me, My Mom & Sharmila,” the feature directorial debut of queer Muslim writer-director Fawzia Mirza, has set its cast. The film will feature Amrit Kaur, the breakout star of Mindy Kaling and Justin Noble’s HBO Max series “The Sex Lives of College Girls”; Hamza Haq, who won best actor in 2021 and 2022 at the Canadian Screen Awards for CTV medical drama “Transplant”; and Nimra Bucha (“Ms. Marvel,” “Churails”). Set in 1999, the film follows Azra (Kaur) over 48 hours as she travels from her home in Canada to her parents’ homeland of Pakistan to bury her father (Haq). Azra struggles to connect with her conservative mother Mariam (Bucha), but her return to Pakistan launches her into memories both real and imagined that reveal their unexpected similarities.
