It was something of an Oz fest as the beginning of the conversation was dominated by George Miller and littered with references to fellow antipodean superstars like Hugh Jackman, Nicole Kidman and Mel Gibson. It was natural Miller was predominant as Hemsworth had flown directly from Comic Con in Brazil, where the first trailer of Miller’s “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga” was premiered.

From its genesis, “Nitram” was designed to be a difficult film to watch. Tackling the events leading up to the 1996 Port Arthur mass shooting that took place in Tasmania, director Justin Kurzel (“True History of the Kelly Gang”) and writer Shaun Grant were treading similar waters as they did in their debut feature, 2011’s “The Snowtown Murders,” utilizing cinema’s ability to bring light to the pain of real-life atrocities and ask important questions as to how these violent men became the way they were, and what gave them the tools to take the actions they did.

There are dozens of reasons to be excited for Justin Kurzel’s upcoming drama, “Nitram,” the artful filmmaker himself and the terrific supporting cast that includes Judy Davis, Anthony LaPaglia, Essie Davis, and more. But the main selling point is likely the scorching lead performance by Caleb Landry Jones which earned him the Best Actor Prize at the 2021 Cannes International Film Festival where the film premiered to outstanding critical reception.

Robert Allan Ackerman, the director whose television work scored five Emmy nominations and who directed acclaimed Broadway productions including Bent and Extremities, died Jan. 10 of kidney failure at Cedars-Sinai Hospital in Los Angeles. He was 77.

The Australian Academy Of Cinema and Television Arts (AACTA) has crowned its winners for 2021, with Justin Kurzel’s Nitram scooping the Best Film award among eight total prizes.

Though “Nitram” never depicts the unspoken horrific massacre that its protagonist commits, the entire film queasily pulses in the anxious anticipation of the unspeakable event. It’s not an easy film to watch, knowing what’s coming but remaining completely powerless, not unlike watching a car crash in motion and being unable to stop it.

Filmmaker Justin Kurzel hit a little bit of a speed bump in his rise as a filmmaker when his first major blockbuster, “Assassin’s Creed,” failed to live up to expectations. However, the filmmaker rebounded quite well a couple of years later with “True History of the Kelly Gang,” which showed Kurzel’s true style and talent once again.

With “The True History of the Kelly Gang” impressing folks earlier this year, people are eagerly anticipating whatever is next for filmmaker Justin Kurzel.
