Christopher Vourlias HBO Max has acquired Central and Eastern Europe rights to “I Know Your Soul,” the crime drama series by Oscar-nominated Bosnian filmmaker Jasmila Žbanić (“Quo Vadis, Aida?”). The show, which world premiered at the Venice Film Festival, is currently playing as part of the Agora Series TV strand of the Thessaloniki Film Festival. Also included in the deal, which was brokered by Munich-based production and distribution outfit Beta Film, is the Serbian thriller “Children of Evil,” based on the best-selling novel by Miodrag Majić.

Christopher Vourlias When it comes to creative pedigree, it would be hard to argue with the bona fides of Bosnian crime drama “The Hollow,” which was co-created by Oscar-winning director Danis Tanović (“No Man’s Land”) and had a splashy premiere Saturday night at the Sarajevo Film Festival. The series is directed by Tanović and Bosnian filmmaker Aida Begić, whose latest feature, “A Ballad,” also received the red-carpet treatment this week in Sarajevo’s official competition.More than just a prestige drama from a region that’s increasingly exporting its shows to the world, however, “The Hollow” could represent a paradigm shift in the countries of the former Yugoslavia, where global streaming services have been acquiring titles such as “The Paper” (Netflix) and “The Silence” (HBO Max) but are yet to put significant investment into local production.

Over the past several weeks, HBO has been putting together the cast and crew that will bring the incredibly popular video game franchise, “The Last of Us,” to life. And while video game fans are probably excited just from knowing that the premium network is going to do a big-budget adaptation, film and TV fans that have little interest in the game will be jazzed by the most recent announcement of two directors that will helm episodes of the series.

The Oscar category of Best International Feature should be taken literally given the financing and five-year process it took to get it for Bosnia and Herzegovina nominee Quo Vadis, Aida? A consortium on nine countries jumped on board to make the most expensive film yet to come out of Bosnia, but it was well worth the effort as writer-director Jasmila Zbanic explained during Deadline’s Contenders Film: The Nominees virtual event.

Jasmila Žbanić had long thought that a film should be made about the 1995 Srebrenica Massacre —the genocide of more than 8,000 Muslim men and boys by Serbian armed forces that took place in her home country of Bosnia while under the supposed protection of the United Nations. She had hoped that she wouldn’t be the one behind the camera, but 20 years on from the shocking tragedy, no film had emerged.

The Balkan war drama Quo Vadis, Aida? by director Jasmila Žbanić picked up the top jury prize and the critics award at the 38th edition of the Miami Film Festival, which handed out trophies on Sunday. The film about the 1995 genocide in Srebrenica as seen through the eyes of a courageous UN interpreter, Aida, earned the juried Knight MARIMBAS Award.

Ferocious and lucid, director Jasmila Zbanic’s film relentlessly pushes to the heart of the matter while accompanying a local UN translator who does everything she can to help while also trying to arrange for the safety of her husband and two sons.

It will come as a surprise to many reading this, but the Nazis were not the only perpetrators of genocide on the European continent in the 20th Century. During the Bosnian War (1992-1995) there was an ethnic cleansing campaign by the Bosnian Serb Army.
