Afropunk was back in its birthplace for the first time since 2019 this past weekend.

Emanuel Okusanya After a nearly three-year hiatus, the Afropunk festival returned last weekend to the borough where it was born: Brooklyn, New York’s Commodore Barry Park. The two-day gathering was anchored by its headliners — Philadelphia’s the Roots and Nigerian superstar singer Burna Boy (pictured above) — and featured its usual broad but Afro-centric range of genres: From alternative rap artists like Doechii and Tierra Whack to Afrobeats star Adekunle Gold, there was a sound for nearly everyone, and the event as a whole struck an inspiring balance between social consciousness and joie de vivre. The festival grounds were curated with African and Caribbean food vendors, Black-owned beauty brands, and a plethora of photo installations.

Ari Lennox has shared a video for new song "Hoodie." The track, produced by regular collaborator and Dreamville label mate Elite, will feature on Lennox's new album age/sex/location, due September 9. A video for the song, starring Isaiah Rashad as a love interest, can be seen below.

On the latest episode of The Joe Budden Podcast, Rashad refers to himself as “sexually fluid.” The May 2021 FADER cover star referenced the apparent outing in his Coachella set, playing videos of positive reactions and supportive messages on screen at the start of his performance and later thanking his fans for keeping him “alive these past couple months.” But the new interview, uploaded to Budden’s patreon Thursday and Youtube Friday, is the first time he’s spoken on the tape directly.

Play-N-Skillz released a music video for their song, “Baila Así.” The collaboration includes three renowned Mexican female artists: Thalía, Becky G, and Chiquis. The 2021 BET Hip Hop Awards took place last night, and with the show came a bunch of energetic and engaging performances. The booking was great, and each production had a fantastic stage design to match.

One of the best surprises on Isaiah Rashad's very good album The House Is Burning was the Lil Uzi Vert feature on "From The Garden." Hearing Uzi go in over a beat constructed around a classic soul sample was a treat, and Rashad had no problem shifting from lyrically dense to hooky and back again. The music video is also well worth your time, as is usually the case with visuals from Rashad's label Top Dawg Records.
