Netflix has nabbed another one, folks. The biggest streamer in the world is snatching up all the top talent it can get its hands on, and now Netflix has landed one of the best filmmakers working today, Hirokazu Kore-eda.

A two-time winner at Cannes, the Jury Prize at the 2013 Cannes Film Festival for “Like Father, Like Son,” and winning the coveted Palme d’Or prize at the 2018 festival for “Shoplifters,” Japanese filmmaker Hirokazu Kore-eda is one of the most beloved and acclaimed international filmmakers we have. He’s been working extremely fast of late, a film a year since 2016, only interrupted in 2020 by the global pandemic.

Heralded Japanese filmmaker Hirokazu Kore-eda did not win the top Palme d’Or prize at the Cannes Film Festival this year—that was in 2018 for “Shoplifters.” But for one, Kore-edais a Palme d’Or winner, not something most filmmakers in the world can say; for two, any time he delivers a film at Cannes, it’s in competition, and this year, with his follow-up “Monster,” the film was honored with the Queer Palm as well as the Best Screenplay award; nothing to sneeze at.

Japanese filmmaker Hirokazu Kore-eda’s latest gem, “Monster,” begins on an enormous inferno. The facade of a hostess club is engulfed in flames of mysterious origin, attracting everyone from curious neighbors to squealing children chasing down roaring fire engines to witness the chaos.

Japan’s most prolific and successful contemporary filmmaker, Hirokazu Kore-Eda, is back in a favorite place, Cannes, for the unveiling of his latest effort, a return to his Japanese storytelling roots and a good one at that. For his seventh film in the main Cannes competition and his ninth overall (counting two that appeared in Un Certain Regard), Monster represents the first movie since his 1995 debut feature Mabofosi that the director has not had a screenplay credit on — this film being written by Sakamoto Yuji — but clearly with its humanist family-centered themes is right in this master craftsman’s wheelhouse.

Moreover, Kore-eda’s film do well at the fest, too: 2013’s “Like Father, Like Son” won the Jury Prize that year, while “Shoplifters” won the coveted Palme d’Or in 2018.

Hirokazu Kore-eda made a bit of a departure with his last film, 2019’s “The Truth.” The French film was the director’s first film set outside his native Japan and the first not in his native language. Now, in his latest film, “Broker,” Kore-eda returns to Asia, but not quite Japan.

“Broker,” Hirokazu Kore-eda‘s latest film, finally hits US theaters on December 26 after vying for the Palme d’Or at the 2022 Cannes Film Festival. Now, Deadline reports that the Japanese director has his next project lined up: “Monster,” based on a screenplay by TV writer Yuji Sakamoto.

In Hirokazu Kore-eda’s Palme d’Or winner “Shoplifters,” a group of small-time thieves forms their own makeshift family, living every day not only through pure survival instinct but a genuine love for each other. For his first film set in Korea, the Japanese filmmaker reflects on similar themes in “Broker,” a road trip odyssey reflecting on the family we choose and the family we tearfully let go of.

Hirokazu Kore-eda‘s next directorial effort is the baby-napping (kidnapping for babies) drama “Broker” which stars Song Kang-ho, who previously played the patriarch in the Best Picture winner “Parasite” and is a fixture of South Korean cinema. Kore-eda, a Japanese filmmaker, made waves in the film awards circuit with his fantastic 2018 drama “Shoplifters” which won the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival and even etched out a Best Foreign Language Film Oscar nomination.

“Some leave, some retrieve,” is the tagline from the most recent teaser for “Broker,” the latest directorial effort from Hirokazu Kore-eda. As part of the Official Selection for the 75th Cannes Film Festival, “Broker” follows Sanghyeon (Song Kang-ho) and Dongsu (Gang Dong-won).

Although it turned out to be David Lynch-less, this year’s Cannes line-up is in no shortage of big names (complete list here). Claire Denis returns to the competition section for the first time in 34 years with her Nicaraguan ‘80s romance “Stars At Noon”; James Gray premieres his childhood-inspired “Armageddon Time”; and, as the headliner, “Crash” and “Videodrome” director David Cronenberg looks set to return to his body-horror roots with the Viggo-in-chrysalis “Crimes of the Future.” And if that competition doesn’t sound fierce enough already, there’s also a new movie from Japanese director Hirokazu Kore-eda, titled “Broker,” which now has its first trailer.

Folks who are longtime readers of The Playlist will no doubt be familiar with our love of the work of filmmaker Hirokazu Kore-eda. And sadly, since the release of his 2019 film, “The Truth,” just a year after his Palme d’Or-winning “Shoplifters,” we have yet to see a new feature from the acclaimed director.
