CBS is in the works on a brand new soap opera series with a Black family as the focus.

Joe Otterson TV Reporter CBS and the NAACP are developing a new daytime soap opera under their content partnership. The series, currently titled “The Gates,” would air on the CBS Television Network with the CBS Studios NAACP production venture producing in partnership with P&G Studios, a division of Procter & Gamble.

The exec, who first joined CBS in 1998 as head of CBS Specials, has served as executive vice president of specials, music and live events at CBS Entertainment since March 2006, adding responsibility for all alternative programming in 2020. He won’t be straying too far from the Eye network, however: Moving forward, Sussman will segue into a role as EP for The Tony Awards and The Kennedy Center Honors starting in 2024.

Fire Country might be expanding into its own universe over at CBS.

Golden Globe Awards were officially announced Monday with Greta Gerwig’s “Barbie” topping taking the lead with a whopping nine nominations. The nominees were revealed at a press conference hosted by “That ’70s Show” alum Wilmer Valderrama and comedian Cedric the Entertainer. The official Golden Globes ceremony is set to take place on Jan.

The Golden Globes have found a new broadcast home. The upcoming 81st edition of the Hollywood awards show on January 7, 2024 will air live on CBS, stream on Paramount+ and be available on the CBS app. This is a marquee slot for the show, which will follow an NFL on CBS Sunday doubleheader and is expected to be supported by a major marketing campaign.

Sean McManus, chairman of CBS Sports and the division’s 27-year leader, will retire next April and hand the reins to David Berson, who has been president of CBS Sports for more than 10 years.

Brian Steinberg Senior TV Editor Wendy McMahon has been elevated at CBS, placed in charge of the company’s CBS News, local stations and syndicated production, now all combined under her aegis. McMahon takes sole oversight of programs ranging from “CBS Evening News” and “60 Minutes” to “Wheel of Fortune” and “The Drew Barrymore Show,” suggesting CBS and its parent Paramount Global see new opportunities to wring synergy from programming that has typically been managed separately.

When it emerged that CBS was eschewing a traditional talkshow at 12:30am following the departure of The Late Late Show host James Corden for a reboot of Comedy Central gameshow @midnight, many in the late-night community worried that it was another nail in the genre’s coffin.

On May 10, CBS unveiled a fall 2023 lineup that didn’t factor the potential impact from the ongoing writers strike (and a possible SAG-AFTRA work stoppage). The executive, who took on his new remit at CBS just weeks before the pandemic struck in March 2020, said the streamers’ series model poses “serious challenges” for writers that the whole industry will need to “figure out” in the long term. K.J. Yossman Actors and creatives from “Star Trek” and “Ghosts” are set to host Master Classes during the Banff World Media Festival in June, Variety can confirm. The two Paramount Global shows will be repped at the 44th edition of the festival, which is set to take place in Banff, Alberta, Canada from June 11-14. The “Star Trek” masterclass will feature “Star Trek: Discovery’s” Sonequa Martin-Green, “Star Trek: Lower Decks’” Tawny Newsome, “Star Trek: Strange New Worlds’” Ethan Peck plus Alex Kurtzman, who is an executive producer for the “Star Trek” franchise, and CBS Studios president David Stapf. They will all be on hand do discuss “ushering in the golden age of ‘Trek,’ growing the franchise, and introducing a new generation to this universe all while staying true to what made it a cultural phenomenon 56 years ago,” according to the festival.

Horgan, who is also co-founder of production company Merman (“Dreamland”) will also appear as a Summit Series keynote speaker. The writer, actor and producer is known for projects including “Motherland,” “Dreamland” (starring Lily Allen) and “The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent,” in which she starred opposite Nicolas Cage. “Sharon is one of the top creators, showrunners and performers in the business, and her addition to Banff’s lineup of keynote speakers underscores the festival’s prominence on the world stage,” said Kevin Beggs, Banff board chair and Lionsgate Television’s chief creative officer. “We are privileged to be partnered with Sharon on ‘Motherland’ for the BBC and are beyond excited about its U.S. adaptation that recently received a pilot order at ABC. I’m thrilled that she will be joining us at Banff.”

Three weeks after the exit of David Nevins left a hole in the oversight of Paramount+ scripted originals, the void is yet to be filled. However, chatter about a restructuring of the operations along the lines laid out in Deadline’s piece on the day of Nevins’ departure announcement has been gaining momentum.

Selome Hailu “Everybody Still Hates Chris,” an animated reboot of Chris Rock’s “Everybody Hates Chris,” has been greenlit by MTV Entertainment Studios to run on Paramount+ and Comedy Central.Like the original series, which ran on UPN and later the CW, “Everybody Hates Chris” will feature Rock narrating stories inspired by his experiences growing up as a nerd in a large working class family in Bed-Stuy, Brooklyn during the late 1980s. Rock executive produces alongside showrunner Sanjay Shah, Ali LeRoi, Michael Rotenberg and Dave Becky.

Thania Garcia Heather Gray, an executive producer for the CBS series “The Talk” and a former supervising producer for “The Tyra Banks Show,” has died. She was 50 years old.
