K.J. Yossman James Norton is no stranger to playing less than salubrious characters thanks to his turns as psychopath Tommy Lee Royce in “Happy Valley” and a Russian mafia boss’s son in “McMafia.” In “Rogue Agent” he once again steps into the skin of a man whose moral compass is, to put it lightly, skewed.
One ballsy man’s spectacular real-life scam that endured in the UK for nearly a decade makes for pulse-quickening escapism in Rogue Agent. This is a story so far-fetched that you’d have trouble buying it in a film unless it really happened, and such is the case here in a yarn that intrigues from the very beginning and only momentarily towards the end loses a bit of its footing. Graced by strong and alluring performances by leads James Norton and Gemma Arterton, this most engrossing drama is an IFC Films release in the U.S., where it will also be available for streaming on AMC+, while Netflix will broadcast it on home turf.
Manuel Betancourt Spy tales and romantic stories make for strange if complementary bedfellows. Both, after all, depend on a building of trust between individuals.

The spy game can get complicated and thorny when love and sex get involved, and trust turns into dark betrayals. That’s essentially the set-up of “Rogue Agent,” a new IFC Films thriller starring Gemma Arterton, James Norton, and Sarah Goldberg, who many will recognize from “Barry.” The story is essentially about con men, seduction, and deception—a rogue agent (Norton), who masquerades as an M15 agent, and the woman (Arterton)—initially seduced by his charms—who brought him down.
