Bradley Cooper and Carey Mulligan on ‘Maestro’ and Not Having ‘Label Conversations’ About Leonard Bernstein’s Sexuality

Clayton Davis Senior Awards Editor When “Maestro” director, writer, and star Bradley Cooper wanted to meet with Carey Mulligan to talk about her joining his Leonard Bernstein biopic, it was “a quite dramatic” beginning. Cooper, who wanted Mulligan to play Bernstein’s wife, Felicia, attended the first preview of her one-woman play “Girls and Boys.” During the show, being staged in New York’s West Village, a piece of wood fell and hit Mulligan’s head. It gave Mulligan a concussion, which she now downplays, calling it a curtain because “it sounds fluffy.” On this episode of the award-winning Variety Awards Circuit Podcast, Cooper and Mulligan discuss the process of getting into the mindset to play the Leonard Bernstein and Felicia Montealegre in Netflix’s “Maestro.” The two break down key scenes, and talk about their favorite acting works from one another.

Who are these movies for?” she wondered. While the Oscar nominations have yet to be announced, “Maestro” has earned numerous nods so far at the Golden Globes and the Critics’ Choice Awards. The drama follows the rise of the famed composer (Cooper) and the relationship with his wife, Felicia Montealegre (Carey Mulligan). The “A Star is Born” actor, 48, also wrote and directed the project, and even prepared for six years to master the “six minutes of music” to recreate Bernstein’s 1976 performance of Gustav Mahler’s Resurrection Symphony. Some X users agreed with McCain’s stance, with someone noting that the movie was “dull” and he “didn’t get through it.”“My wife and I started it but turned it off 15 mins in when it became clear this was meant as an ‘artistic movie’ for the Hollywood Elite.

‘Maestro’ Review: Bradley Cooper’s Triumphant Turn As Leonard Bernstein Is A Love Story On More Than One Level – Venice Film Festival

Hollywood has had a very spotty record in telling the complete truths of some of our great musical geniuses. 1946’s Night And Day, an attempted, but really fictionalized, biopic on the life of Cole Porter with Cary Grant, totally ignored his real life homosexuality as well as sham marriage. That is just one example. The latest in the genre, Maestro having its World Premiere tonight at the Venice Film Festival, does not attempt to be a biopic at all on the great Leonard Bernstein, but instead puts its key focus on the relationship and 25 year marriage of Bernstein and his wife, Felicia Montealegre Cohn Bernstein, a star in her own right on the Broadway stage. All of it is presented including bringing up their three children – Jamie, Alexander, Nina – as well as Bernstein’s own bisexuality and attraction to younger men, not a secret to his wife.
