TELLURIDE – Let the record show that Emerald Fennell is an utterly fearless filmmaker. I mean, we already knew that to an extent after her audacious debut, “Promising Young Woman,” but to say she’s taken that to another level with her latest extravagant concoction, “Saltburn,” is an understatement of epic proportions.

Peter Debruge Chief Film Critic It’s the moment of truth for Emerald Fennell, whose “Promising Young Woman” established the actor-turned-auteur (last seen playing pregnant doll Midge in “Barbie”) as a formidable new filmmaking talent. Building on the barbed sensibility she established with “Killing Eve,” the writer-director’s zeitgeist-throttling feature debut lured audiences like a bright red candy apple, leaving them with plenty to debate after the cyanide-laced sugar high wore off.

The haves and have-nots of Great Britain have always served as ripe subject matter for writers of every stripe and the tradition continues in Saltburn, a vibrant if rather familiar take on the class system circa 2006. Emerald Fennell, following up on her Oscar-winning script for Promising Young Woman, reveals a strong hand behind the camera, even if the trajectory of the story feels rather overwrought and familiar. Nonetheless, the writing is alive and often amusing, giving the fine cast a lot to play with.

The Telluride Film Festival didn’t officially kick off its 50th edition until Thursday, but at least one attendee decided to get an early start the night before.

A follow-up to her critically acclaimed effort “Promising Young Woman,” the upcoming project sees a hapless college student search for a welcoming clique; what he discovers is another student offering a different world and the prospect of an irresistible invitation.

McKinley Franklin editor Barry Keoghan and Jacob Elordi are gearing up for the summer of their lives in the official teaser trailer for Emerald Fennell’s sophomore feature “Saltburn.” Set in the mid-2000s, the twisted drama follows Oxford University student Oliver Quick (Keoghan), who finds himself intrigued by the world of his aristocratic peer, Felix Catton (Elordi). Felix then invites Oliver to Saltburn, his family’s luxury estate, where they spend “a summer never to be forgotten” together. In addition to Keoghan and Elordi, the “Saltburn” cast includes Rosamund Pike, Richard E.

The Telluride Film Festival, a key part of the fall festival circuit launching awards season and perhaps some major Academy Award contenders, announced the wide-ranging lineup of films for its landmark 50th edition. The fest kicks off Thursday and runs through Labor Day and will feature world premieres of Oscar winners Alexander Payne’s The Holdovers (Focus Features), Emerald Fennell’s Saltburn (Amazon) and Free Solo filmmakers Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi and Jimmy Chin’s narrative feature Nyad (Netflix).

Clayton Davis Senior Awards Editor The 50th Telluride Film Festival official lineup has been announced, revealing multiple world premieres including Emerald Fennell’s “Saltburn,” George C. Wolfe’s “Rustin,” Jeff Nichols’ “The Bikeriders” and Alexander Payne’s “The Holdovers.” In addition, the festival will pay tribute to Oscar-nominated director Yorgos Lanthimos, whose film “Poor Things” will debut Stateside after premiering at the Venice Film Festival.

Naman Ramachandran London-set dystopian drama “The Kitchen,” directed by Kibwe Tavares and Daniel Kaluuya, will close the 67th BFI London Film Festival. The film marks the feature directorial debut of Oscar-winning actor Kaluuya, who also co-wrote with Joe Murtagh (“Calm With Horses”). Just in time for Oscar season, 20th Century Studios has dated the Jeff Nichols written and directed, The Bikeriders, which follows the rise of a Midwestern motorcycle club through the lives of its members. The pic will open on Dec. 1 this year.

Amid all the noise about studios taking apart the fall and fourth-quarter release schedule over the SAG-AFTRA strike, here’s some good news: Amazon is taking its Emerald Fennell-directed movie Saltburn out on Black Friday, November 24, in New York and Los Angeles. Pic will expand December 1.

Charna Flam “Succession” has made Emmy history with its three lead actors, Brian Cox, Kieran Culkin and Jeremy Strong, all earning nominations for lead actor in a drama — the most nods ever for a single show. Since the show’s premiere in 2018, the first three seasons of “Succession” have received 13 Emmys out of 48 nominations. Strong won the lead actor Emmy in 2020 and was also nominated in 2020, beating his co-star Cox both years. This year marks Culkin’s first lead actor nomination, and he was up for supporting actor in 2020 and 2022. Last year, “Succession” made Emmy history for the most acting nods ever, with 14 acting nominations out of 25 total nods. Culkin, Nicholas Braun and winner Matthew Macfadyen were all up for supporting actor in a drama in 2022, while J. Smith-Cameron and Sarah Snook were both nominated for supporting actress.

 director Greta Gerwig enlisted production designer Sarah Greenwood and set decorator Katie Spencer to bring Barbie's Dreamhouse to life they never envisioned causing an international shortage of pink paint.The trio opened up to  about the gargantuan effort, which drew inspiration from Palm Springs midcentury modernism. For starters, Gerwig wanted to «literally» create «the alternate universe of Barbie Land» as they aimed for «authentic artificiality» whenever possible.So instead of opting for CGI when it came to the picturesque sky and San Jacinto Mountains backdrop, Gerwig wanted the backdrop to be hand painted.«Everything needed to be tactile, because toys are, above all, things you touch,» Gerwig told the venerable magazine.And, in order to maintain the «kid-ness» of the Dreamhouse, the director said everything needed to be pink.«I wanted the pinks to be very bright, and everything to be almost too much,» she added.And it too much.According to Greenwood, construction of the Dreamhouse — which was erected at the Warner Bros.

Lift, the forthcoming action comedy teaming Kevin Hart with director F. Gary Gray (Straight Outta Compton), has pushed its Netflix premiere date to January 12, 2024, the streamer revealed on Monday. Also unveiled was a first look photo for the film, at one point set to open on August 25, 2023, which you can view above.

EXCLUSIVE: American Honey director Andrea Arnold next film is gearing up as Deadline has confirmed that Barry Keoghan and Franz Rogowski are in talks to star in Bird with Arnold directing. Not much is known about the film other then it begins filming next month which is why Keoghan had to part ways with Ridley Scott’s Gladiator sequel which shoots at the same time.
