EXCLUSIVE: Sony’s 3000 Pictures has set Justin Kuritzkes to adapt City on Fire, the first of a bestselling novel trilogy by Don Winslow that is being developed as a star vehicle for Austin Butler.

EXCLUSIVE: In a move that ought to make fans of The Beatles twist and shout, Sony Pictures Entertainment and Oscar-winning filmmaker Sam Mendes and his Neal Street Productions have set plans to make four separate theatrical films, one on each of the members of music’s most famous and enduring band.

Austin Butler has found his next starring role.

Austin Butler will star in Sony 3000 Pictures’ adaptation of “City on Fire.” The Don Winslow-penned novel, the first in a series, uses elements of “The Iliad,” “The Odyssey,” “Aeneid” and other Greek dramas and puts them in a contemporary crime sandbox. Butler will play Danny Ryan, a street criminal-turned-ruthless leader amid a gang war between Irish and Italian crime families in New England.The film will mark the actor’s first role since his Oscar-nominated for playing Elvis Presley in Baz Luhrmann’s “Elvis,” as well as his first as a producer.

EXCLUSIVE: In his first star role set since his Oscar nominated turn as Elvis Presley, Austin Butler will star in City On Fire, the Sony 3000 Pictures adaptation of the Don Winslow novel. This will be Butler’s first film as producer, alongside David Heyman and Shane Salerno. Studio has made this a high priority, and will be meeting with writers and filmmakers immediately.

EXCLUSIVE: Elizabeth Allen Rosenbaum and Elizabeth Gabler are looking to reunite as Deadline is hearing Rosenbaum is coming on to direct an adaptation of of Jessica Anya Blau’s bestselling coming-of-age novel Mary Jane for Sony and Gabler’s 3000 Pictures. Rosenbaum and Gabler along with Erin Siminoff, who is also at 3000 Pictures, worked together on Aquamarine and Ramona and Beezus for Fox 2000. Blau will adapt the script.

Oscar-winning filmmaker Ang Lee has cast his son Mason Lee to play Bruce Lee in a biopic about the legendary martial artist for Sony’s 3000 Pictures.The “Brokeback Mountain” director will helm a script by Dan Futterman (“Capote,” “Foxcatcher”), building on previous versions by Jean Castelli, Alex Law and Mabel Cheung and, most recently Wells Tower.Bruce Lee’s daughter Shannon Lee will produce the film, which is untitled for now, along with Ang Lee, Lawrence Grey of Grey Matter Productions, Ben Everard, and Brian Bell. 3000 Pictures’ Elizabeth Gabler and Marisa Paiva will oversee the project on behalf of the studio.
