A year ago, trades announced that Oscar-nominee Austin Butler (“Dune: Part Two“) would be leading a feature film adaptation of the famous Don Winslow crime saga novel “City On Fire” (No, not the similarly-titled Chow Yun-Fat movie that inspired Quentin Tarantino‘s “Reservoir Dogs“). A potential franchise starter for Sony, the crimed dra awould explore two criminal empires, Irish and Italian syndicates, that control New England and has been compared to the scope of something on the level of “The Godfather.” It’s been a long minute since we’ve heard an update, but Deadline reports the project has landed an impressive screenwriter to tackle the script.

While Amazon MGM Studios didn’t take the stage at CinemaCon, they did meet with exhibitors and key press to strut their future theatrical slate, in particular they showed off ten minutes of the Dwayne Johnson and Chris Evans’ movie Red One. While we agree to keep mum about the details of the Santa Claus rescue movie, let’s just say the originally conceived for Prime Video title is definitely meant for theatrical, which is where it’s going on Nov. 15; the only wide release currently on that weekend.

EXCLUSIVE: After strong start to 2024 with Masters of the Air and Dune Part 2, Oscar-nominee Austin Butler is looking to build on that success and is teaming up with another Oscar-nominated director. Sources tell Deadline Butler is set to star in Academy Award nominee Darren Aronofsky’s (The Whale, Black Swan) crime thriller Caught Stealing for Sony Pictures. The studio recently landed the package which is based on the book by Charlie Huston. The script will be written by Huston with Protozoa producing.

Earlier this week, Amazon and Netflix started a bidding war over the rights to “Crime 101,” an adaptation of a Don Winslow novella with Chris Hemsworth and Pedro Pascal attached to star. No surprise there, as Pascal is one of the buzziest actors in the industry right now, and Hemsworth’s projects continue to succeed.

With “The Bear” doing gangbusters over at Hulu, all eyes are on Christopher Storer and what he might do next. Well, it appears he’s ready to trade in his stories about chefs for a new story about a hitman in the upcoming film, “The Winter of Frankie Machine.”  According to Deadline, Christopher Storer has signed on to direct a new crime drama, “The Winter of Frankie Machine,” which is based on the novel by Don Winslow.

Brent Lang Executive Editor Christopher Storer is no slouch when it comes to orchestrating kitchen chaos, having created the hit Hulu comedy-drama “The Bear.” Now, he’ll turn his camera on “The Winter of Frankie Machine” and trade trades the tense world of short-order cooking for a mob story about a hitman who is lured out of retirement to set up a meeting between waring crime families only to turn into a target himself. It’s a mean streets saga that previously attracted attention from the likes of Martin Scorsese, who was set to make it at Paramount Pictures with Robert De Niro, only to abandon it in favor of “The Irishman”; as well as Michael Mann and William Friedkin.

Fresh off his awards season run, it appears Austin Butler is ready to take on his first major starring role, in a potential franchise no less, since earning acclaim for “Elvis.” And his role in the upcoming “City on Fire” couldn’t be further from what he did as the King of Rock and Roll. According to Deadline, Austin Butler has signed on to produce and star in the upcoming crime drama, “City on Fire.” The film, which is based on the novel of the same name by acclaimed author Don Winslow, follows the rise of a criminal from low-ranking soldier to boss during a war between an Irish gang and the Italian mob.

Austin Butler will star in Sony 3000 Pictures’ adaptation of “City on Fire.” The Don Winslow-penned novel, the first in a series, uses elements of “The Iliad,” “The Odyssey,” “Aeneid” and other Greek dramas and puts them in a contemporary crime sandbox. Butler will play Danny Ryan, a street criminal-turned-ruthless leader amid a gang war between Irish and Italian crime families in New England.The film will mark the actor’s first role since his Oscar-nominated for playing Elvis Presley in Baz Luhrmann’s “Elvis,” as well as his first as a producer.

Sony Pictures has landed rights to the upcoming Dolly Parton starrer Run, Rose, Run in a highly competitive situation, Deadline can confirm. EVP of Literary Affairs Drew Reed was instrumental in landing the deal, which was contingent on a theatrical release for the film.

Kiss of the Spider Woman, for which he won Best Actor at the 1985 Oscars, passed away today (March 13) of natural causes. He had been diagnosed with terminal prostate cancer in early 2018.As Deadline report, Hurt’s son Will announced his death in a statement, writing: “It is with great sadness that the Hurt family mourns the passing of William Hurt, beloved father and Oscar winning actor, on March 13, 2022, one week before his 72nd birthday.
