The Directors Guild of America announced the television, commercial and documentary nominees for the 2022 DGA Awards and one film dominated the Dramatic Series category. In an embarrassment of riches, “Succession” took all five nominations recognizing Kevin Bray, Mark Mylod, Andrij Parekh as well as the team of Robert Pulcini and Shari Springer Bergman.

The annual awards for the guild that settled with the AMPTP while the other two major guilds went on strike and that former guild somehow reaped the same rewards afterward were held tonight and, shockingly, there were few surprises. In perhaps the most expected win of the night “Oppenheimer’s” Christopher Nolan won the Theatrical Film honor, the top prize at the 2024 DGA Awards.

Meredith Woerner Deputy Editor, Variety.com Welcoming nominees and guests to the 76th DGA Awards, director, producer and writer Judd Apatow greeted the audience joking, “I’m your host Bradley Cooper in an even more beguiling Jewish nose.” Apatow opened up with a zinger drafting off the DGA’s history of never striking against the studios. He noted that his agents told him to hold out for more money for his fifth time as host of the ceremony: “But in the spirit of the DGA I accepted their first offer.” Taking aim at the current political landscape, Apatow addressed the crowd stating, “I swear to god if this is the only time you vote this year, you can all go fuck yourselves.” He noted the age of the likely nominees for the presidential election, Joe Biden and Donald Trump.

It’s been a rough eight months for the Directors Guild of America, but the union that said let’s make a deal before its peers have weathered the storm, and hope springs eternal as we begin 2024. Well, perhaps that was before their DGA Awards nominees for Movies for Television and Limited Series were announced.

At tonight’s DGA Awards, directors Dan Kwan and Daniel Scheinert landed Best Theatrical Feature with their A24 smash Everything Everywhere All At Once — besting competition that included Todd Field (Tár), Joseph Kosinski (Top Gun: Maverick), Martin McDonagh (The Banshees of Inisherin) and Steven Spielberg (The Fabelmans) in their first time out at the ceremony.

Jessica Plummer put on a glamorous display as she attended the British Academy Television Craft Awards Nominees Party in London on Thursday.  The ex-EastEnders star, 29, wowed in a satin black slip dress, while boosting her height in a pair of pink heels.

A day after “Succession” dominated the television nominations, the Directors Guild of America announced the key film nominees for the 2022 DGA Awards. To no surprise, “The Power of the Dog’s” Jane Campion, “Dune’s” Denis Villeneuve, and “Belfast’s” Kenneth Branagh made the list.

You thought it was nearing an end, didn’t you? No, the 2022 Oscar season isn’t as long as the pandemic delayed 2021 season, but it sure is close. AMPAS members don’t even begin to vote on the nominations until January 27.

It was a wonderful night for female filmmakers as five women took prizes at the 2021 DGA Awards. From film to television to commercials, these directors proved that the Director’s Guild of America may be the most progressive guild of them all (already expecting pushback from the WGA members in my life).

Will the DGA make history tonight? Should Nomadland director Chloé Zhao or Promising Young Woman filmmaker Emerald Fennell win in the Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Theatrical Feature Film category, it will rep the second time that the DGA has awarded its top prize to a female director after Kathryn Bigelow for 2008’s The Hurt Locker. 

The Directors Guild of America Awards were first held in 1949. The first woman to be nominated in the Feature Film category was Lina Wertmüller in 1977.

As Hollywood attempts to grapple with a changing production and theatrical environment due to the coronavirus pandemic, the major guilds have been weighing the implications of previously scheduled contract negotiations and how to protect their members from overly zealous producers. But, distractions are always welcome and awards conveniently fit that description.

The ceremony for the 72nd annual Directors Guild of America Awards is currently underway at the Ritz-Carlton Hotel in downtown Los Angeles.

After a four-day delay, the Directors Guild of America has finished announcing this year’s TV nominees, includng Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Television Dramatic Series; Comedy Series; and Variety/Talk/News/Sports – Specials for 2019.
