Just hours before the WGA and the studios are scheduled to start stridulous talks on a new overall contact, the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers have decided to publicly play nice, firmly.

EXCLUSIVE: There was “fire and brimstone” at tonight’s WGA membership meeting – the last to be held before the start of contract negotiations with the AMPTP on Monday. The meeting, held via Zoom, was led by the co-chairs of the guild’s negotiating committee: former WGA West presidents Chris Keyser and David A. Goodman.

Leaders of the Writers Guild of America won’t discuss the specifics of the contract proposals they’ve exchanged with the Alliance of Motion Picture & Television Producers. But in an interview with Deadline on Tuesday ahead of next week’s start of negotiations, they made it perfectly clear a deal can be reached without a strike if the companies take the needs of writers seriously.

The WGA East and WGA West have appointed the members of their negotiating committee for upcoming contract talks with the Alliance of Motion Picture & Television Producers – a showdown that could trigger the first writers strike since 2008. The guilds’ current contract expires May 1, 2023.

More than 400 WGA screenwriters, showrunners and TV and streaming writers have signed a pledge saying they’re “committed to fighting for WGA coverage for all animation projects we create, write or produce moving forward. Paramount+ has set a release date for its upcoming YA film “Honor Society.”The coming-of-age story will debut on the service toward the end of July. Starring Gaten Matarazzo and Angourie Rice, “Honor Society” explores the costs and rewards of being a tenaciously ambitious young woman in the modern world.

EXCLUSIVE: Production has begun on Honor Society, a new live-action horror film from Awesomeness Films. Angourie Rice (Mare of Easttown, Spider-Man: No Way Home) has top billing as the titular character Honor, with Gaten Matarazzo (Stranger Things, Prank Encounters) and Christopher Mintz-Plasse (Super Bad, Kick-Ass) also leading.

Meredith Stiehm, running unopposed, has been elected president of the WGA West, becoming only the third woman to ever hold the guild’s top elected office.

Saying that “this may be my last official request as President of the WGAW,” David A. Goodman is asking members to take a quick survey about the current status of their representation by agents and managers. Goodman’s term ends on September 21, when he’ll be succeeded by Meredith Stiehm, who was one of the leaders in the WGA’s historic campaign to reshape the agency business.

Meredith Stiehm will be the next president of the WGA West. Stiehm, running unopposed, will succeed David A. Goodman, who has termed out, on Sept. 21.

Fresh off the WGA’s historic victory over the talent agencies, WGA West president David A. Goodman opened his remarks tonight at the 73rd annual Writers Guild Awards with a good-natured poke at Ari Emanuel, the CEO of Endeavor, the parent company of WME, which was the last to sign the guild’s franchise agreement.

David A. Goodman has been president of the WGA West since 2017, and will term out in September, bringing to an end one of the guild’s most consequential presidencies.
