Alison Herman TV Critic Last month, HBO said goodbye to two of its signature series: “Succession,” a tale of three born billionaires vying to replace their aging patriarch; and “Barry,” an action comedy that unlocked new levels of ambition in its star-auteur, Bill Hader. Fans — and, one presumes, the network — were left with a vacuum the next seasons of “The White Lotus” and “House of the Dragon” are too far off to fill. Fortunately, a show that combines the best of both its erstwhile peers returns June 18 for a third season. “The Righteous Gemstones” remains consistent in its outrageous opulence and crude humor, but its latest chapter is unusually well timed. Like “Succession,” “The Righteous Gemstones” follows a family poisoned by wealth and power at a crucial inflection point; like “Barry,” the show has a visual panache that defies our expectations for a half-hour comedy. But unlike either show, “The Righteous Gemstones” resists the impulse to justify its grandeur with dramatic or tragic Jake elements. The Gemstones are not the Roys, forced to confront the emotional poverty beneath their material riches, nor Barry Berkman, scrambling for redemption without real accountability. They’re buffoons, their idiocy only amplified by the motorcycle chases, musical sequences and megachurch sermons that immerse us in their world. The straightforward comic tone doesn’t detract from the sharp observations made by creator Danny McBride and longtime collaborators including Jody Hill, John Carcieri and David Gordon Green. Instead, it channels their insights into masculinity, the South and American conservatism, previously honed on “Vice Principals” and “Eastbound & Down.”
“Succession” may be over, but there’s another show still on HBO about a wealthy patriarch with three meddlesome children that seems only to be growing in popularity. And this one shows no signs of ending soon.
two summer shows. From hotly anticipated hits that are returning for their sophomore season, to old favorites making comebacks, to brand new fare, here’s everything you need to know. Premiere date: June 22 on Netflix.A follow up to the 1997 British comedy about steel workers who form a male strip-tease act, this series is set 25 years later, following the same band of working class brothers.

With heavyweights like “Succession” and “Barry” concluded, many have asked on social media, what’s the best show on HBO now? The answer that has come up a lot lately is maybe an unexpected one in “The Righteous Gemstones,” the televangelist family comedy from filmmakers Danny McBride, Jody Hill, and David Gordon Green, the producers and creative team that brought you HBO’s “Eastbound & Down” and “Vice Principals.” READ MORE: Summer 2023 TV Preview: 40 Must-See Shows To Watch Now in its third season, HBO has released the official trailer for the series, which debuts with two episodes on Sunday, June 18, on HBO and MAX.

Ethan Shanfeld HBO is bringing back its most beloved ultra-rich adult children fighting for the family business. I’m talking, of course, about the Gemstones. Danny McBride’s absurdist megachurch comedy returns for Season 3 on June 18, as “The Righteous Gemstones” unveiled the first trailer for its next installment. The high-octane teaser clip features monster trucks, high-speed racing and none other than Steve Zahn, who appears to play a well-dressed rival to Jesse, Judy and Kelvin Gemstone (played respectively by McBride, Edi Patterson and Adam DeVine). John Goodman also stars as the Gemstone family patriarch, alongside series regulars Cassidy Freeman, Tim Baltz, Tony Cavalero and Walton Goggins. The official Season 3 logline from HBO reads, “When the spoiled Gemstone children finally get their wish to take control of the Church, they discover leadership is harder than they imagined and that their extravagant lifestyle comes with a heavy price.”
HBO is about to lose one of its most popular comedy series this month, as “Barry” comes to a close. But in June, it appears that “The Righteous Gemstones” is returning to pick up some of that comedy slack.
