Here, he will tell the Civil War story of a Union spy named James Andrews who, with infantry volunteers, conspired to hijack a Confederate locomotive named the General. Racing along at speeds up to 60 MPH, they destroyed track to the main southern supply route behind them and shut down communications by cutting telegraph lines, all to disrupt the Confederacy’s supply line to end the war. The six surviving raiders became the first to receive the Medal of Honor, awarded by Abraham Lincoln. The caper would also be the historical basis for Buster Keaton’s silent film The General.

Pat Saperstein Deputy Editor Richard J. Anobile, a noted author of film books and post production supervisor and producer, died Feb. 10 in Toronto after a brief illness. He was 76. Born in New York, Anobile wrote more than 30 film books. His started out with books about the Marx brothers, including “Why a Duck” in 1971, followed by “The Marx Brothers Scrapbook,” Anobile co-authored the book with Groucho Marx, and it featured interviews with the then-octogenarian and never-before-seen photos and documents. Anobile’s other classic comedy works included books about W.C. Fields, Buster Keaton and Laurel and Hardy. His books covered every facet of entertainment, from “Mork and Mindy” and James Whale’s “Frankenstein” to “The Maltese Falcon” and “Psycho.”

Dennis Harvey Film Critic Jalmari Helander hasn’t made a feature since 2014’s “Big Game,” then the most expensive Finnish film to date. It was an unabashed, bombastic, good-humored action crowd-pleaser that indeed pleased crowds — at festivals, while mysteriously failing to catch on with general audiences. Presumably his concept was just too “high” for mainstream viewers to swallow: Though they don’t have any problem with Gerard Butler or Will Smith doing similar honors, it seemed too much to accept a 13-year-old Finn boy singlehandedly rescuing the president of the United States from an obstacle course of assassination peril.  That failure must have hurt; Helander has spent the interim on episodic work. His new “Sisu” is, in many ways, cut from the same cloth as “Big Game” as a splashy popcorn action piece unconcerned with credibility, pushing well-worn ideas to outlandish, and outrageously entertaining, ends. But the writer-director has hedged his bets by moving one key piece in the game to the opposite end of the board. This time, instead of a juvenile protagonist that made viewers wonder whether they were watching a movie for kids or for grown-ups (the answer “both” apparently confused them), we get a crusty coot quite spry enough to take on all foes. Which bad guys might pretty much be termed “the entire Third Reich.” 

Lise Pedersen Leading Dutch animation studio Submarine (“They Shot the Piano Player,” “Fox and Hare,” “Where is Anne Frank”) has presented its latest TV series project based on the bestselling Max children’s books at Europe’s industry event for TV series-in-the-making in the south-eastern French city of Toulouse. A pre-school series of 52 seven-minute episodes, “Max” is a character-driven show about a small kitten with a large appetite for adventure, who sees himself as a fearless predator but is just a little ball of fluff. The series will embrace the simple, clear and colourful 2D aesthetic of award-winning British author and illustrator Ed Vere to allow the viewer to focus on the characters.

EJ Panaligan editor Gerald Potterton, an animator and filmmaker whose most notable works include “Heavy Metal” and the Beatles’ “Yellow Submarine” film, died on Aug. 23, the National Film Board of Canada announced on Wednesday. He was 91. He died at the Brome-Missisquoi-Perkins Hospital in Cowansville, Quebec, where he lived for most of his life. His most prominent work was directing the 1981 animated cult classic “Heavy Metal,” an anthology film of different science fiction and fantasy stories surrounding a force that is described as “the sum of all evils.” He also worked as an animator on the Beatles’ 1968 musical comedy “Yellow Submarine,” which became lauded as a work that broadened the general population’s interest in animation.

Gerald Potterton, the London-born filmmaker and animator who directed the 1981 animated cult favorite Heavy Metal and contributed to the memorable “Liverpool” sequence in the 1968 Beatles film Yellow Submarine, died today at a Quebec hospital. He was 91.

Director James Mangold is about to complete the final leg of photography on Disney‘s “Indiana Jones 5,” but he’s already developing yet another biopic after helming movies such as “Ford v Ferarri” and movie “Walk The Line.” His next project will explore a Hollywood icon, Buster Keaton. Deadline reports that Mangold is going to direct and produce a feature film focused on the life of Buster Keaton, the legendary film star that did his own stunts and was sort of doing Jackie Chan-level daredevil acts for the entertainment of audiences before it was commonplace.

Buster Keaton (1895–1966) was a brilliant comedian and filmmaker who conceived, wrote, directed, acted, and even edited most of his ten feature films and nineteen short comedies, which are perhaps the finest silent pictures ever made. With a face of stone and a mind that engineered breathtakingly intricate moments of slapstick, Keaton has become an icon of the American cinema.

EXCLUSIVE: With production on Indiana Jones 5 hitting the home stretch, James Mangold is getting his future dance card in order and has his attention directed towards a film centered around one of Hollywood’s most iconic talents. Sources tell Deadline, Mangold and 20th Century Studios are in development on a project about the life of filmmaker and comedian Buster Keaton, with Mangold set to direct and produce. The film is based on the book Buster Keaton: Cut to the Chase by Marion Meade and execs have made this a top priority as they meet with writers to adapt the book.
