Vampire Weekend have played a special gig to mark the recent total solar eclipse – see what surprises the band had in store below.Last night, the New York band took to the stage at the scenic Moody Amphitheater in Austin, Texas at approximately 6pm BST and played through the solar eclipse, treating those in attendance to a handful of surprises from debuting new songs live and special guests joining them for covers.Kicking off with Bonnie Tyler’s ‘Total Eclipse of The Heart’ playing on the speakers as the band took to the stage, they opened the show with the live debut of ‘Ice Cream Piano’, off their newly released album ‘Only God Was Above Us’.Other songs from ‘Only God Was Above Us’ that got their live debuts during Vampire Weekend’s special eclipse gig include ‘Connect’, ‘Gen-X Cops’, and album closer ‘Hope’. ‘Hope’ was performed after the band took a break to watch the eclipse with those in attendance.Absolutely unbelievable moment.

William Earl From the Technicolor merch to the staging to the setlist, everything about Phoenix and Beck’s joint headlining Summer Odyssey Tour was breezy during a New York stop at Madison Square Garden on Saturday. The strictly fun vibe was best illustrated by the featherweight “Odyssey,” a new tune the two acts released this year to commemorate the trek (sample lyrics: “We’ll fall into the ocean / I’ll be there / On an odyssey in the sun”).

Phoenix have shared ‘Winter Solstice’, the latest single from their forthcoming album ‘Alpha Zulu’.‘Winter Solstice’ marks Phoenix’s first song to not be crafted collectively by the band in the studio, with frontman Thomas Mars writing the track’s stream-of-consciousness lyrics to a beat sent remotely by fellow bandmates Deck d’Arcy, Laurent Brancowitz and Christian Mazzalai.The track sees Mars sing in distorted vocals atop building synths, musing on “fine jewellery” and “girls playing hula hoop”. ‘Winter Solstice’ is accompanied by a music video, which was directed by Warren Fu.

Phoenix have discussed the “synchronicity” they feel with Vampire Weekend, whose frontman Ezra Koenig features on their new single ‘Tonight’.Speaking to NME for last week’s Big Read cover story, the band discussed the making of their upcoming new album ‘Alpha Zulu’, which was recorded at Paris’ Musée des Arts Décoratifs in the Palais du Louvre.They also spoke of their kinship with Vampire Weekend, and how the collaboration with Koenig came about.
