Reassessing Adam Neumann, the Cult of the Founder and How WeWork Is Not Theranos

Shirley Halperin Executive Editor, MusicWith Jared Leto’s performance in the Apple+ original series “WeCrashed” still echoing, and the Emmy Awards soon upon us, is it any wonder Adam Neumann remains on the minds of the media? In 2019, the WeWork cofounder was ousted from the CEO position of the company he launched with Miguel McKelvey. His eccentricities, including a party-all-the-time, spend-spend-spend ethos, played no small role in his downfall, though a golden parachute of $1.7 billion certainly helped cushion the landing. As it turns out, soon after Neumann arrived in the United States some 20 years ago, he would encounter — via his sister, Adi — another Israeli-American just making his way into the world of wealthy investors:  Guy Oseary, longtime manager of Madonna, whom Variety named Music Mogul of the Year in a cover story out this week.

Upon sitting down, Jared Leto (Apple TV+’s “WeCrashed”) and Amanda Seyfried (Hulu’s “The Dropout”) reveal they both approached their characters as layered humans — not mustache-twirling villains. They also had to find their real-life inspirations’ distinct voices, which was no small feat.JARED LETO: Thank you for being here.

‘WeCrashed’ Star Kyle Marvin Explains His Bob Marley Scene and His Final Moments with Jared Leto

Selome Hailu SPOILER ALERT: Do not read if you haven’t watched “The One With All the Money,” the series finale of “WeCrashed.”Despite starring in a limited series about the very public demise of a somewhat cult-like multi-billion dollar company, Kyle Marvin is rather uninterested in drama.“It’s easy to poke fun at people, and it’s hard to empathize with people,” says Marvin, who plays WeWork co-founder Miguel McKelvey in “WeCrashed.” “I think we’re hardwired for the salacious version of these stories. We’re hardwired to call this true crime, and hunt for, ‘When was he an asshole? When did he punch someone in the face?’ We’re always hunting for something nasty.”This perspective makes sense, given Miguel’s role in the story. Adam Neumann (Jared Leto) is the wild-eyed face of the company, comparing himself to a god and earnestly envisioning himself as the world’s first trillionaire.

“WeCrashed”Friday, March 18, AppleTV+If you haven’t had your fill of starry prestige dramas based on real-life con artists (after “Inventing Anna” and “The Dropout,” among others), then have we got a starry prestige drama based on a real-life con artist! In this case, it’s “WeCrashed,” focusing on Adam Neumann (played by Jared Leto) and his wife Rebekah (Anne Hathaway), a pair of kooks who sold WeWork as the next great advancement in office culture and then screwed it up almost beyond repair. It’s always fun to watch Leto do his extreme Method shtick (this time dying his hair, wearing prosthetics and affecting an exaggerated Israeli accent) and the story is as fascinating as it is well-documented (last year, the company was the subject of a terrific Hulu documentary, “WeWork: Or the Making and Breaking of a $47 Billion Unicorn”).
