Potter has since departed for Chelsea, and last month was replaced by Italian coach Roberto De Zerbi. Although Guardiola and De Zerbi have never worked together, Guardiola knows his quality well having acted almost as a mentor for the 43-year-old during his coaching journey.
De Zerbi first met up with Guardiola while the latter was still coaching Bayern Munich, and has kept in touch with his friend while coaching Sassuolo, Shakhtar Donetsk and now Brighton.
Last season Guardiola namechecked De Zerbi when he was discussing the most exciting Italian coaches, while De Zerbi has spoken at length about his style of football and the similarities with Guardiola's.
"Guardiola’s football, I think it is unreachable," De Zerbi - who labelled Guardiola's Barcelona team the best side of the last 40 years - said at his Brighton unveiling last month.
