This year, instead of hiring a movie industry stalwart like recent Oscar show producers Steven Soderbergh and Will Packer who separately oversaw Academy Awards broadcasts over the past couple of years that were, shall we say, memorable for all the wrong reasons, the Academy has turned to awards show and live TV veterans Glenn Weiss and Ricky Kirshner and gone for experience rather than take a chance on someone who is not known for putting together a massive television production for Hollywood’s biggest night of the year. In going the safer route AMPAS returned to the days of Gil Cates who reliably produced 14 Oscar shows and could be counted on to try new things, but also uphold tradition.
Weiss is actually no stranger to the Oscars having directed the seven previous ceremonies for which he won two Emmys, plus 21 Tony Awards shows for which he won 12 Emmys. Along with his partner Kirshner who also has 30 years of entertainment production experience and won 9 Emmys, the pair between them has also done numerous Super Bowl Halftime Shows, political conventions, Emmy Awards shows, Presidential Inaugurals, and so many more. They took some time off from their preparations for the 95th Annual Academy Awards to join me in a conversation about what they have planned for this year’s show. Oscars are still in recovery mode coming off last year’s controversial “slap” edition, and the previous year’s stripped down pandemic-affected ceremony (the lowest rated Oscars ever by far). This time around it feels like a return to normalcy – or at least that seems to be what they hope for plus a little help from Best Picture nominated blockbusters like Top Gun: Maverick, Avatar: Way Of The Water, and Elvis to help goose audience interest.

up two million viewers from the previous year (the year of “the slap”) to a total 18.8 million viewers. They brag about the 13% uptick before launching into how (and I’m guessing here), somewhere in Idaho, six 17-year-olds watched the show for an average of two minutes, which resulted in the audience being 0.25% younger.
BreAnna Bell Viewership was up Sunday when an average of 18.7 million viewers tuned in to see “Everything Everywhere All at Once” earn best picture honors and dominate the 95th Oscars on ABC with seven wins. That’s according to early, time zone-adjusted ratings from Nielsen, which includes out-of-home viewing — but keep in mind, that number could change when the final nationals are in. The Oscars, which repped the return of host Jimmy Kimmel for the first time since 2018, was up 12% from last year’s ratings. And according to those time-zone-adjusted fast-national numbers from Nielsen, it bested the previous year’s 3.8 rating by 5% in key adults 18-49, earning a 4.0 in the demo.
The executive producers of the 2023 Oscars, Glenn Weiss and Ricky Kirshner, gave an interview about the show and revealed some interesting information in THR.
It was a ceremony dominated by wins for “Everything Everywhere All At Once” and “All Quiet on the Western Front.” Telecast producers Glenn Weiss and Ricky Kirshner clearly had an idea of what was in store as they slotted the show’s categories to create as much natural drama as possible when, in fact, there turned out to be very few upsets. Still, with the pair booked for three more ceremonies, there was a lot that worked and a lot that didn’t.
Maybe it was the way Brendan Gleeson pointed at Jenny the emotional support donkey, or how Julia Louis-Dreyfus jazzed up what could have been a sleepy introduction to the costume design category by saying how she was donning a dress from National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation. Either way, the 95th Annual Academy Awards served up plenty of delightful moments for awards show-weary viewers.
