Nomadland tops the Washington DC Area Film Critics Association Awards

Brown and Kerry Washington are speaking up about the lack of diversity in the Hollywood Foreign Press Association’s ranks, namely the fact that the organization does not currently have a single Black member.This wave of criticism comes ahead of Sunday’s 78th Annual Golden Globes ceremony.

Ever since the release of Netflix’s new awards-contending drama, “Malcolm & Marie,” the discussion around the film seems to stem from the writing/direction of Sam Levinson. Most people agree that Zendaya and John David Washington are doing well in their performances, but there are folks that are concerned about a white man (Levinson) as the writer-director of a film about a Black filmmaker and his relationship with a much younger Black woman.

The Vancouver Film Critics Circle has named Chloé Zhao's Nomadland as its best international feature of 2020 as the American road movie continued its run as an early award season contender. Zhao also picked up the best director honor, while Frances McDormand earned the best actress trophy for her role in Nomadland.The late Chadwick Boseman was voted best actor for his star turn in Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom.

John David Washington, 36, stars in the new Netflix film Malcolm & Marie with Zendaya, 24. The movie, which is being released on Feb. 5, follows a filmmaker and his girlfriend as they confront long-simmering issues between them. Malcolm & Marie was filmed in secret during quarantine using COVID-19 safety precautions.

Wolfe who presented the late actor Chadwick Bosman with Performance of the Year Award at Critics’ Choice Association’s virtual annual celebration Of Black cinema. “He was so present, not just as an actor but he was present as a human being.”

As Black History Month kicks off, Comcast NBCUniversal and African American Film Critics Association (AAFCA) are partnering to launch the Black Experience on Xfinity, a first-of-its kind destination of Black entertainment, movies, TV shows, news, and more. The newly launched channel will be available Xfinity X1 and Flex as well as the Xfinity Stream app.
