Ron Howard Talks Telling Stories as a Filmmaker Ahead of Receiving Variety’s Legends and Groundbreakers Award

Jenelle Riley Deputy Awards, Features Editor Though his movies have made billions at the box office and he’s been awarded pretty much every major accolade, from the Oscars to the Emmys to a Grammy, Ron Howard has achieved an honor even more rare: He’s maintained his reputation as one of the nicest guys in the business. It’s why the team behind Fox’s animated hit “The Simpsons” got such a kick out of portraying Howard as the ultimate Hollywood stereotype in his several appearances on the show. Howard would show up, often clad in a baseball cap and bathrobe while sipping a martini — even at a movie premiere or going to a special zoo for famous people. (For the record, Howard knew how his cartoon doppelgänger would be drawn: “I was in on the joke,” he assures Variety.)

How ‘Avatar’ Got a High Frame Rate Makeover That Actually Looks Great

“Avatar” during its new theatrical engagement (or maybe are watching it for the first time), you are no doubt blown away by its presentation.“Avatar” looks noticeably better than it did when it debuted in theaters back in 2009 – it boasts improved picture quality thanks to a new 4K remaster and is now presented in high frame rate (or HFR), which creates a more fluid image. As eye-popping as the original presentation of “Avatar” was, this new version is even more visually stunning. But this new presentation did leave me with a question: How did the movie go from being a standard, 24-frames-per-second movie (as it was when released in 2009) to an updated, 48-frames-per-second marvel? Like Jake Sully (Sam Worthington), the crippled marine who takes a mystical voyage to the alien moon of Pandora, I embarked on an equally exotic quest … to Burbank, California.

Sault Drops ‘Angel,’ a New EP That Is Actually a 10-Minute Song

Jem Aswad Senior Music Editor Sault, the intentionally shadowy British R&B outfit led by Little Simz/ Michael Kiwanuka/ Adele producer Inflo, are back with a new EP called “Angel” — which is actually a single 10-minute song that is more like three different songs and a spoken-word passage combined into one. While details on the release are slim (as always with this group), presumably an album is not far behind. Not surprisingly, the new release is different from virtually everything the innovative R&B group has released in the past. “Angel” starts off like a power-trio version of a Bob Marley song, with a male reggae vocalist — apparently Jamaican singer Chronixx, who is credited on the song along with Inflo and British singer Jack Penate — singing over a jazzy drumbeat and a repetitive lead guitar hook. But after three minutes, the song stops and shifts into a piano-led ballad, with Chronixx continuing on theme about Zion, but with a gorgeous soulful chorus backing him. A spoken word passage then follows, and the song concludes with what is basically a third song, a gentle acoustic song that fades out with a “Soul Rebel” chorus.

Fox News hosts make on air U-turn after learning what Kanye West actually tweeted

Fox & Friends Weekend were forced to make an on-air u-turn after learning about the hateful things Kanye West actually tweeted over the weekend.Initially, Will Cain, Pete Hegseth and Rachel Campos-Duffy supported West after it was revealed he was banned from Instagram for posts deemed “anti-semetic”.On Saturday (October 8) West shared a series of texts he’d exchanged with Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs following Combs’ criticism of his ”White Lives Matter” t-shirt – a slogan tied to white supremacist movements. In one of those texts, West wrote to Diddy: “I’ma use you as an example to show the Jewish people that told you to call me that no one can threaten or influence me.” Shortly after that, his Instagram account was restricted by Meta and posts were removed.“We’re in this weird era where people can’t just say what they want to say,” said Campos-Duffy, who had seen the post.

‘Death of a Salesman’ Review: Groundbreaking Broadway Revival Packs a Mighty Punch

Marilyn Stasio Theater Critic In the new Broadway revival of “Death of a Salesman,” Wendell Pierce’s powerhouse performance firmly identifies Willy Loman as a tragic hero for these modern times. It’s a searing portrait of a working-class man who has struggled all his life to achieve. Not a man who works with his hands, or on an assembly line, but a man — a Black man — who goes to work in a suit and is welcomed wherever he goes by clients who greet him with a grin and a handshake. As a traveling salesman, he has dignity, respect and a shot at the American Dream, so long as he maintains his footing on the ladder of success — and pulls up his two sons behind him. If Willy should lose his job, he’ll lose that dignity, that respect, that place in society which defines him as a successful Black man in a white man’s world.

‘The Midnight Club’ Is a Teen Horror Show That’s Actually Scary: TV Review

Daniel D'Addario Chief TV Critic Mike Flanagan has, of late, distinguished himself as one of Netflix’s signature creators and as a generational figure in the horror genre; though his past series for the streamer, including “Midnight Mass” and “The Haunting of Hill House,” have been of various quality overall and from episode to episode, they’re consistently interesting. His willingness to engage ideas with his scares sets him apart, perhaps more than it should. So it is with “The Midnight Club,” which Flanagan and Leah Fong co-created based on the work of YA novelist Christopher Pike. Here, Iman Benson plays Ilonka, a college-bound high school salutatorian who receives a diagnosis of terminal cancer. Ilonka is both a star student and an idealist; she researches Brightcliffe, a facility to which her foster father can take her to be placed into hospice, and holds in reserve a secret hope that there will, there, be a miracle cure for her. What she finds, first, is a circle of ill teens who gather when the clock strikes twelve to share scary stories; it’s a mordant nihilism they share, and a sense of indulgent pleasure in the knowledge that things could be worse: They could be fighting against cosmic forces of evil.
